You can buy it there and send it through Viet customs and see how that works.   Seriously, just send a cake, balloons and flowers for now. There are many places that you can order these online and have them delivered. Just buy (or make) the present there and bring it with you when you come.

As far as testing the gold, it's really pretty simple. Bring your own scale and testing solution. It's fast and easy to do. Testing solution for 24k gold can be bought for under $10 USD. I don't know how much you're planning on spending but for something of any real value I'd check it.

If there's someone you can trust with and you guys are close enough, you can ask them to do you a favor and give them the money back when you're in Vietnam again. That's what I'm always do for my best friend when he needs to buy presents for his gf and his gf's family. He is in Vietnam once a year and give me back the money, which is only around 500 to 600 USD of presents worth for the whole year.

Thats what I did. My contact there bought the ring in a trusted store and I ll give back the money when im over in HCMC in two weeks time. Thanks for your advice, all of you guys!
