Bus from HCMC to PP

Tran Hung Dao

I'm going to HCMC this weekend to find a reputable bus company to go to PP.  A fellow American recommended Mekong Express which I'll gonna check out.  I've heard Cambodian-run transportation/tour companies are better than the Vietnamese companies so what other Cambodian buses should I check out that has both terminals/offices in HCMC and PP?  Don't just spam names but let me know your experiences with them as well.

I'm particularly concerned about the border crossing since it's an opportunity for unscrupulous operators to fleece uninformed tourists.  I've been told it's $20 for a VISA but what about the under-the-table fees?  I wanna know so if the operators says something "I'll need $100", I can tell him to go fly a kite.

By the way, what happens if something goes wrong and I get off the bus at the border?  Can I just "walk across"?

(note this is a duplicate post copied from the Cambodian forum because I'm seeking opinions from Expats in both countries)

THD,

I have never had to take a bus to Cambodia but I make the trip every 3 months and can tell you that there is no need to pay anybody anything. I normally get my Cambodian Visa online because it does not take a page in my passport. The cost for that is $28USD. I believe the cost at the border is $20USD with your own passport photos and $25 if you don't have any photos.

I typically just walk straight to the line for foreigners on the Viet side, ignoring everybody that says they can get me through no problem, put my passport in the window, stand there and smile at the guy until he stamps it. Unless there is a lot of people it usually only take 10 minutes or so.

Also you might want to bring a pen in case you have to fill out your own Cambodian declaration form yourself.

The bus staff on mekongexpress will get you the visa for cambodia for $25 total, the staff collects the money and passport while on the bus. Getting the viet visa, best to go to the embassy yourself and just pay the government fee. I did mine at the consulate and could have waited for it but returned next day for it. No need to pay hotel or agent to process. I would recommend going to Siem Reap for a few days also PP can be depressing with the focus on the killing fields. Just my 500 dong worth.

You can book ticket from 301 Pham Ngu Lao for Phnom Penh Sorya Transport.
The conductor will collect your passport for Cambodia Visa and the fee is $25.

I went with this company before (4 years ago) no problem: https://www.thesinhtourist.vn/

come to think of "crossing border", I did walk "around" while waiting for white tourists to finish their visa forms (the tour company collected all passports and brought to the immigration, bcoz I don't need visa for Cambodia so it was super fast with only a stamp in my passport) and I remember walking all the way to the front of the casino but no one seemed to care about me walking cross the border, no officer was there at the border anw. Note: I only had money with me, no passport (tour company kept), no clothes (backpack left on the bus) but I'm an easy going girl! =))))

Why didn't you need a visa to go INTO Cambodia?  German citizens require a visa to visit Cambodia.  Or am I reading your little flaggies wrong?

stumpy

Could be something to do with ASEAN.

While true that Cambodia doesn't require visas for Vietnamese citizens (and vice versa), I was under the assumption that Ngan Khanh is a German citizen based on her flaggies.

THD, She also holds a VN passport like a few other members here on the site do that claim another country's citizenship

Thanks for the clarification.  I assumed it but wasn't entirely positive Ngan Khanh is a dual citizen.

I still can use the Vietnamese passport =)
