Do I have to declare $$$ + Iphones at airport?

mikeymyke

I'm from Canada and will come to Vietnam late this year.  I'm going to bring $7000 + 2 iphones. One of the phones is for my fiance, the other is mine.

Do I have to declare anything?  The limit for cash is $7000 but there is no mention of actual value of goods.

Any traveller website will give you exactly what you need.
There's even a Vietnamese customs and immigration page online in English. Try them.

On my last trip (around 11 months ago), I had 3 laptops (1 old, 2 brand new unboxed). I also had 2 phones, ipad all unboxed aswell and had no problems. I got called aside for 1 box of luggage at the final scanner just before u go outside as it had meat in it. When I asked why, they pointed to a sign showing that meat content is prohibited and pointed to a guy sitting at the scanners and told me to talk to him nicely and and he'll let me take it.
I went over, slipped him 10$ and tapped on his shoulders and off I went.

As for cash, I never bring more than the limit so never had to declare. Just bring under the limit, if u need more, get family to send it over like how u sent it to your fiance.

Nope, You are allowed to bring up to $7000 undeclared. I didn't have any problems bringing my iphones in so I don't expect that you will either.

Just don't bring anything in its original packaging like new, and you'll be fine. Whenever I bring something like a gift for my wife, I unbox it and put it in my carry-on bag. I fold the box flat and pack in my luggage. When I arrive here, just re-assemble the box, put the gift back inside, and wait for the occasion. :) With iPhones, do the same. You just can't break down an iPhone box without destroying it (unless the new ones are in conventional cardboard boxes now - I don't know), but it's small enough to place in the luggage with a pair of socks or other small item inside. :) If you don't need the original box, by all means, leave it behind.

I'm sure anyone with nefarious intentions reading this website will let their buddies know you're coming in with a wad of dough.  I just read this article

http://www.thanhniennews.com/index/page … aught.aspx

about gangs going INTO the airport to steal from guests instead of waiting for them to come outside.  Talk about the fox getting into the chicken-coop.

I would recommend you just bring 2 grand, split up in multiple "wads" stuffed in various areas.  Before you come to Việt Nam, have a means of sending yourself cash.  So then after you get here and spend all your 2k, you can then send yourself some money.

I just have heard many stories of tourists/foreigners getting like 10K, 7K, multiple-K stolen and thought to myself "who walks around with $120,000 in their pockets?" ($120,000 is to Canucks and Yankees what $7K would be to the average Vietnamese to put it in perspective..4-5 times annual salary).

You are such the stickler. Earlier posts were commenting on taking items out of the box, where to pack it, declaring items, thieves showing up and stealing items etc. Soooo I was making a little joke between you and me about the bug killer apparatus and where you would like me to put it. Humor is difficult to transpose in the written text. Of course it has to be funny first I guess.
