Obtaining VN license with US license that will expire in 6 months

Parmyd

I am lookin to obtain my Vietnamese license but tthe problem I have is my US license will expire in 6 months. I understand that they will only give you a license for as long as your US license is good. The question I have is if I obtain a VN license will I be able to renew or will I have to take the written and driving test in order to renew it?

in My understanding, you hold then a Vietnamese driving licence, which might be renewed to VN rules. The current just takes you around some VN burocratic hurdles and should not be copy of the US licence

Parmyd,

When you apply for a Vietnamese driver license via your American license, once approved, your Vietnamese license will only be issued for as long as your visa says and for as long as your American one is current. Notice, you won't have to take any exam.

Therefore, if you want to drive in Vietnam beyond the expiration date of your American license, I recommend that you go through the Vietnamese exam process, which will make your license renewable on its own.

Hope that helped,
Howie

Any idea where I can get a copy of the questions they may ask on the test?

I thought that as you already hold a licence you will not have to do the written exam. I'm sure you'll only need to take the practical test.

kevinchau

You only need to take the practical test/exam if you already had the license (must be Left hand drive)

Neither my uk or vn licence stipulate right or left hand driver only. I've owned both in the uk. What a bizarre rule.

Indeed if you look at bikes alone there is NO difference at all in any country to the layout of controls.

yeah, i know, hope u can get it soon

Thanks for the answers. Guess I'll drive down to HCM next week and give it a shot.

Parmyd,

I would help you if I could.  But, I didn't take any test; and I had my license thing done in Can Tho.

What I can tell you is be cool with the folks at the Dept. of Transportation, there are a lot of good things that they can do for you, if you can get on their good side...

Best of luck,
Howie
