Vietnamese 🇻🇳 citizenship for foreign spouses

Michael Boylan

Hi all.

Have any expat members had any experience with trying to become a VN citizen to your knowledge ? I’m currently searching for information on this precise topic, but a lot of what I’ve found is contradictory or from unconfirmed sources. That said I’m still having issues flying domestically in Vietnam with my VNeID 😩😩 thus far I’ve managed to get on my flights, but most check in agents and their managers  haven’t been trained. In one case in November, departing Phu Quoc the head of immigration had to authorise my travel. Booking into hotels using VNeID has been less of a problem. Apart from one hotel in Da nang last week, that flatly refused to accept it.

Regards

Hello, about How to be a VN citizen, what points did you find contradictory?

Regarding the VNeID, it is certainly a headache for foreigners yet. I have it, but also useless because foreigners cannot do any update on it by themselves, while VN citizens just pair the chip in their plastic ID to the cellphone and ready. Therefore it is better to wear your hard TRCand passport (or 6 month notarized copy) with you

Hi ajairon,

I read one article that said ask a spouse of a VN citizen you don’t need to show financials and you don’t need the language level. However another article contradicted this statement completely. With regards to my VNeID i simply refuse to get out my passport or TRC when travelling, the frontline staff, because they’ve had NO training, need to start recognising this a valid form of domestic travel. Only then will it become easier for us all. I’m not rude, I do everything with a smile and always (apart from da nang hotel) 🤣Get my point across and get on my merry way.

Hi, regarding the VN citizenship, the money and language exemptions are true only for family ties able to support you, that means: a marriage. The only requisite unclear to me is how guaranteed is the VN President will approve your request to keep your nationality of origin (the dual citizenship must be approved by the VN President). I know many people living here for years with their VN spouses, but unfortunately none of them have run for a PRC or Naturalization either.

So, the paperwork is not complicated, maybe US$ 700, and hope the President accepts you to get a dual citizenship and with your own name. Go ahead, then share your experience to us

About VNeID and expats, I will act as the Devil's Lawyer: is your photo shown in your VNeID passport? If not, won't blame the hotel or travel agents for denying your identity

The VNeID is not yet ready for foreigners, but it's why the have, but it's a good idea and the VN Gov. must start with something
