Long Thanh Airport

Silverado84

Does anyone know when flights are being routed to this new airport? It's going to be a long commute from Long Thanh into HCMC with the traffic congestion and all. Hope they got decent rest stops along the way.

This is not a long drive. In fact the new airport should be convenient to both Saigon and Vung Tau. Rest stops do not exist along roadways in vietnam. There are some places where there are businesses that cater to roadside stops for trucks and buses.  The roads are not limited access highways. That may change but I have not heard anything in this regard. A quick peruse of the internet does not give particularly detailed information but it is roughly 60km from the airport to central Saigon. Train service is apparently not past the proposal stage and likely will not appear for quite some time if at all.

One article (Vietnam moves to build second terminal, third runway at Long Thanh airport) mentions that "Several phase one components were inaugurated last month and welcomed their first official flights, and the airport is expected to begin commercial operations in June."

Of course, you should check for updates in the coming months.

Your statement about rest stops not existing in Viet Nam is incorrect, all long distance buses have rest stops and I've seen many along roads in the Mekong for truck drivers.

I agree that there are scheduled stops on long(ish) intercity bus routes for bathroom/snack/smoke breaks, but my experience has been that these stops are usually on routes of 4+ hours length.

There might also be that the definition of what a "rest stop" is varies. What qualifies as a rest stop in Australia might not be what qualifies as one in Canada(?).

Surely the driver are limited to so many hours driving? Well probably in the western world.

There was talk of limiting the length of time drivers here can drive but so far, to the best of my knowledge, it has been just talk.
