Expiring TRC and Border Run

dlewis516

Hey  Aidan,

I am hoping you will be able to guide me.  I am a US citizen living in HCMC for the past 11 years with a TRC  Unfortunately, I am no longer able to find a sponsor for a TRC, which expires 9 November.  So my tentative plan is to take a run to Moc Bai and exit with my TRC and then re-enter with a tourist visa.  Will I be able to get a visa at the border upon re-entering, or should I get ahead of time?

I read your previous warning that there can be a time lag between the reporting of my departure on the TRC and then issuing a new re-entry visa.  Will this affect me?  Will I have to stay overnight or days waiting for confirmation of departure from Vn?  Or is there an agent who could expedite the whole matter for me so I could return the same day?  Any recommendations?  [I am un-employed so looking to save money, if possible].

I greatly appreciate your sharing your expertise with this!  This is my first experience with a "border run."

   Best,  Dane

Cheapest option BY FAR is to pay an agent to arrange your same-day return, once you successfully exit the country during normal business hours for Immigration.

You'll be back in Vietnam within 2 to 4 hours.

Otherwise, you are likely looking at the better part of a calendar week waiting in Cambodia, paying for lodging there; much more expensive than paying for an agent.

Yes, odds are that you WILL be delayed in having your exit stamp registered when you leave the country at a land border crossing, UNLESS you pay for the intervention of an authorized agent.

Visa on Arrival INTO Cambodia is available at the border.

NO, a reentry visa for Vietnam will NOT be available for purchase at the border.

Hello, if your TRC is near to expire, certainly you are in a bit hurry.Better call a Tourist agent, they will fix your Visa to Cambodia with all the mandatory info (3 years ago the Border controller denied me to leave Vietnam if I don't show the Visa to Cambodia). Also the Agent will fix your Visa to enter Vietnam with the address of your homestay.if you want, ask them in advanced to get a multi entry visa. If you want to do that run in same day, you need to know that journey is about 3 hours with the help of the agent.  Keep some 300k dongs in your pocket to buy something to eat at the Cambodian side and some other 20 usd in case of they ask you for pictures (they shouldn't but it happens).

Please, after your experience, share it with us to keep us updated about the procedures, times and prices

Hey Aidan,

Hi Dane (long time member of expat.com). Thank you for your PM, and thank you for posting to the forum. As mentioned, this is a topic which will be of interest to many others on the forum.

Excellent info from members OceanBeach92107 and ajairon. I'll expand on their posts just a little.

That is quite soon and as suggested, the services of a local, trusted agent would be in order. If you'd like I can send you the contact info of an agency which has helped many other of our members and has earned the reputation of being reliable.

So my tentative plan is to take a run to Moc Bai and exit with my TRC and then re-enter with a tourist visa. Will I be able to get a visa at the border upon re-entering, or should I get ahead of time?

You must hold a Vietnam eVisa to reenter there, as there is no VOA (visa-on-arrival) available at the Moc Bai crossing.

I read your previous warning that there can be a time lag between the reporting of my departure on the TRC and then issuing a new re-entry visa. Will this affect me? Will I have to stay overnight or days waiting for confirmation of departure from Vn?

Some members have reported waiting for up to a week (or longer!) before immigration is made aware of their having exited VN. This is due to the fact that it is the military which mans all land/ocean border checkpoints, while immigration dept. personnel man the intl. air checkpoints. Immigration and the military do not share the same reporting network/system.

Or is there an agent who could expedite the whole matter for me so I could return the same day? Any recommendations?

Yes-siree-Bob, there is. In fact, I'm sure there are quite a few agencies which could facilitate the quick issuance of an eVisa, but one in particular has earned a stellar reputation with our members. We try not to promote any particular agency on the open forum, so let me know if you'd like the contact details and I'll PM you the info.

Understood, of course. On top of the cost of the new VN eVisa, transportation to/from Moc Bai, food and drink along the route(s), you'll have to account for the cost of purchasing your Cambodia visa. There are two types of Cambodia visas available at their land crossing borders, and though I can't recall their specific nomenclatures/designations, I do recall that one is available at $30US, and the other at $35US. The $30 Cambodia visa is for single entry and is suitable for the purposes of your border run. There have been reports from members of their having to contribute a little coffee money  to permit their check in/check out of Cambodia, as "officially" a traveller is required to spend a minimum of 24 hours in Cambodia before their being permitted to exit back into VN. 100K to 200K VND is sufficient.

The Cambodia visa(s), either the $30 or the $35, can be paid in VND, so no need to worry about carrying USDs with you. If you intend to pay in USDs, make sure the dollar bills are in like-new, pristine condition, as counterfeit USDs are an issue that Cambodian immigration officers are wary of.

Hey Dane.

This agency has an excellent reputation among expat.com members.

https://www.***.com/

The cost includes the VN gov't application fee, and the agency's fee.

https://www.***.com/vietnam-visa-fees/

You'll want to get the "90 day single entry", under an "Emergency" application.

As I understand it, you'll pay for the eVisa, and upon receiving the exit stamp in your passport you'll send them a pic of it. They must see that exit stamp before they proceed with processing your application. Send them the pic of the exit stamp while you're still at the VN border office before crossing over into Cambodia. This'll allow the agency to get started promptly.

If you get to the VN border early (~8:00-ish) and send them the exit stamp pic right away, you should receive your new eVisa electronically on your device, either by Zalo, messenger, WhatsApp, or email. Reports are that a 4 hour turnaround on your "Emergency" application approval is standard, but again, confirm this with the agency.

Make sure you give them a call at **** *** *** to confirm all of this. VN immigration will accept your electronic eVisa, so no need to have it printed.

As an American passport holder you’ll have no issue with approval.

!!!***

I just noticed that November 9th is a Sunday. The eVisa application/approval offices are closed on Saturday and Sunday, so you will want to exit on Friday November 7th (or Thursday, the 6th) to get this going. Don't(!) wait until Monday the 10th, as this will put you in an overstay situation, wherein you'll be forced to travel to Tan Son Nhat airport, pay your overstay fine, and exit by air. Overstay travellers are not permitted to exit via land border crossings. This is very, very important to remember!

Please don't forget to report back how you fare with this.

Best of luck, sir.
