Impact of ME tensions on fuel and electricity in Thailand?

Intl guy jim

Hi folks,

Some news about how the cost and availability of oil due to the Mid-East problems has popped up in the news here.  One article mentioned Thailand.

Are you seeing problems, whether availability of gas for cars, cuts in electricity, etc.?

I'm still a couple of months out from my intended travel date(s), (just getting ready to submit visa request), but every little scrap of info that might impact would be most appreciated!  Stay safe!

My relatives run petrol stations in Northern Thailand and they’ve been struggling with supply,no sooner does it come then its sold out. I believe they’re limiting the amount each customer can have. Where our place is in Thailand local garages are limiting the amount each customer can have to 500baht, which is fine for scooters but it won’t fill a car or a pick up which a lot of people have over there.

Thanks, Kev.  Electric power?  Is Thailand mostly still petrol generation, or are they on the road to solar and other renewables?

There seems to be a lot more electric cars on the road in Thailand now and I’ve noticed more electric charging points popping up but I think it’s got a long way to go yet personally. Solar power seems to becoming more popular and a lot of new builds seem to come with solar panels installed and big stores like Thaiwatsadu stock a full range of solar products.

Never done that

Gasoline raise 3 Thb because of the war.

But last week when we tank again, It was back at normal rate.

No problem with supply in our area.

Price for electricity go up/down month by month.

As Thailand buy some (Think it is around 15%) electricity for neighbouring countries.

Thailand imports a significant and growing amount of electricity, with imports serving roughly 15% of the country's electricity demand as of 2024–2025.
Total Import Volume: In 2023, Thailand imported approximately 35.81 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity.
