Quality of customer service in Thailand

Hello everyone,

Customer service can say a lot about everyday life in Thailand, and for many expats, it’s something that could take time to get used to. In order to help expats and soon-to-be expats to adjust to local expectations, we invite you to share your insights.

How would you describe customer service in Thailand?

Are staff generally friendly and helpful, or more formal and direct?

How do businesses handle complaints or requests for refunds?

Do expats get treated differently than locals?

Any tips on how to get the best service in Thailand?

Share your experiences and stories, whether positive, challenging or funny!

Thank you for your contribution.

Thailand works largely on the "caveat emptor" principle – many people are swept away by what they perceive as "service" at their hotels – e.g., a towel on the bed twisted to look like a swan and lots of uniformed staff scurrying about... (this applies to most businesses in Thailand where face outweighs substance). The visitor or expat often forgets that because wages are so low, most businesses can afford to have a lot of staff performing menial tasks.

5-star service costs nothing in Thailand

However, the problems start when you have problems.

Once they have your money, that's it. If the aircon doesn't work, they may or may not fix it but would never offer another room or discount.

In the UK they have "fair trade" laws which legally expect product performance – put simply, if you buy a car, you expect it to have 4 wheels and take you places; food should not be toxic; a pair of shoes should last a reasonable time – no such consumer protection exists to any extent in Thailand. Most people luckily avoid these sorts of problems, but everyone needs to be prepared for such events should they occur – don't rely on the type of redress you may get at home, as it doesn't exist.

Also bear in mind that if you do have any problem, whatever it may be, NEVER RAISE YOUR VOICE – if you do, you have lost completely

Problem with hotel room like air con, no hot water and so on.

Go to the front desk, If they have other room, They give you the option to move room.

If no free room, They might give you the option to upgrade room, And give you a fair deal per day.

If no room and you choose to leave, You can settle you bill.

If you owe the  hotel money, You pay.

If the hotel owe you money, Hotel pay you your money back.

Shop like flowers & soil, furniture and so on, often have a service, If you buy for more then 1.200-1,300 Thb.

The shop deliver for free to you your adresse if inside 10-15 km, A small fee of 200 Thb if you live longer distance.

Wife order a lot via shopee and they all so have great customer service.

Missing item, Have next day before lunch.

Wrong colour of cloth, They say keep it, And correct colour she have next day before lunch,

If some thing is broken, shopee send a guy early the next day.

As soon as he take a picture of the package and send it to shopee, inside 10 minute, Wife have her money back.

AIS Fiber Net.

When they need to work in my area and they know i lose my connecting.

I get a sms in great English say so, From what hour to when finish time.

If doing the day they need more time before finish, I get sms about it.

After connection back online and they can see my router is not online after a few hours.

A nice girl that speak great English call and ask if she can help me get online.

Hospital 2 days before my injections call to remind me about the appointment.

And tell me what i can / cant eat and drink.

Same when i have to go to ICU/CUC fora check for my heart on other hospital.

Car service:

Every time for 7 years, They wash the car and order lunch for us.

The first 3 years the showroom pay for man hours of service and therefor a few time.

The part we need to pay, They say no need to pay.

So in my experience the customer service in Thailand is the best.

I never even hear anyone talk about other country that get close to this customer service.

Have to be the one of, If not the best in the world.

Kindly.

Thanks, Never Done That!  When I finally get to Thailand (now looking at September.....) I hope my experience is more like what you describe than Khunwilko!

Don't count my business trips (short, Bangkok only) but my two vacations in Thailand 27 and 35 years ago matched your description more.  Perhaps the category of places I stayed was a factor......

Forgot to write this.

Yesterday we get a bolt into our car tire.

We drive to B-Qick, And get them to fix it.

And once again, Same as 2 years ago, It is free.

"If no free room, They might give you the option to upgrade room, And give you a fair deal per day.

If no room and you choose to leave, You can settle you bill."

I think you have no experience of this at all!

You can think what you want.

But we try 2 times now, 1 time  air con, 1 time no hot water, And was given the chance to upgrade our room for fair price.

The upgrade room cost 1.300 Thb more per day then we all ready have to pay.

They ask for 700 Thb more per day, I want to give 500 Thb per day.

So we settle on 700 Thb per day, and we was able to eat once per day for free at the hotel resultant.

So at the end we didnt really have to pay more, As we eat for 500-800 Thb per day.

Now let talk about who dont know what they talk about (You)
