Single person to move to Penang

Ritika

Hi folks,

I will be relocating to Penang from India (I am Indian) in a few months as I have accepted a job offer in one of the tech companies there. I will be moving alone. Which is the best locality to live in which is closer to my work place (office will be in Bayan Lepas), well connected, having places nearby to eat (also find stores where I can get Indian groceries coz I will also be cooking at home),shop. sight see, find options to keep myself busy on weekends (say join swimming classes, dance classes etc.,). I basically do not want a place which feels very dull and sleepy, but has stuff that I can do close by. Also, I would be looking for a fully furnished condo or a apartment which which all ammenities, such as good speed internet, fully furnished (having air conditioning, TV, fridge , microwave, oven, washing machine, furniture etc.,)  has swimming pool in the complex, shopping places close by..

How is life for a single in Penang? Also, if I dont plan to buy a car, can I manage easily using Grab? Are they readily available or cannot be relied upon completely? Is using Grab for commute to/from office everyday, for shopping, for groceries, for weekends, etc., expensive?

Your opinion and advice would be helpful.

Thanks,
Ritz

Although not the best in terms of finding information about the south of Penang Island, consider joining Facebook groups such as Expats in Penang or EXPAT in Penang to access local suggestions and opinions. There is plenty of vacant property available and a good network of bus links as well as Grab.

Thank you Gravitas for the info.

I just checked and there are several Penang Indian groups as well (joined one myself). There are also Penang Indian expats groups.

So do explore Facebook to establish as many connections as possible.

Thanks Gravitas!! Any specific groups you can point me to (genuine/active ones) which you can suggest I can join?

Gravitas

I have given you some of the active international Facebook group names in Penang*. I am not actually an Indian Expat here in Penang so can't comment on how active those groups are. No harm in joining or following groups to find out. Can leave or unfollow again easily

*the majority of Expats live in the North of penang Island and working Expats in the South.

Thanks for your help Gravitas. Appreciate it!
