where to live in HK for 6 to 9k? office is near Wan Chai station

Hello,

I will be moving to HK by the end of the year and my office is 3 blocks from Wan Chai station. I've been looking for a shared apartment and my budget is 6,000 to 9,000 HKD max, ideally 7,500 to 8,000 but I might push it to 9k.

So far I've been looking at areas around Sai Ying Pun, Sheung Wan, Causeway Bay, Tai Koo Shing and Lohas Park, which are the only ones that I know of from friends.

I feel like places closer to central are more expensive and the buildings are pretty basic, sometimes without an elevator. that's why so far I like Lohas Park a lot since buildings look modern and with lots of amenities. My only concern with Lohas is the commute, according to google its 50 mins to Wan Chai, is this true or should I take more time into account? how difficult is leaving the building during peak time, am I gonna get stuck in an elevator for 20mins? Would I spend more money on commute than what I would save in rent if I lived closer to the center? Say I stay for beers in central HK, is there public transport to get to Lohas past 1am?

Are there any areas similar to Lohas Park that might be closer to Wan Chai?

You could try looking at Heng Fa Chuen which I think is the stop before Chai Wan. I lived there when I first came to Hong Kong in 1989 and I worked in Sheung Wan at the time. I was on a really limited budget back then and that place seemed affordable. Later I moved to Discovery Bay which had a 25 minute commute by boat.

You will have zero issue living in Lohas Park. There is no subway after 1am but taxis are very cheap and lots of night buses. Note that it is the same situation in Heng Fa Chuen (which is on the island but you can only get there by car).

Shared flats are common and easy to find in your range in Wanchai, Sheung Wan or SYP. These are very active districts and you will save time and money by not having to commute.

You can also look Tseung Kwan O and Quarry Bay, on one side, and in Hung Hom on the other side (with a direct ferry to North Point and all-night buses)
