Mooving soon to Kampala...

jorge_escobar81

Hello, we are a colombian family (wife and newborn baby) and I accept a job offer in Kampala, we are quite concern since we dont know much about the city!!  We have few questions, your feedback or any tip are more than welcome!!!

1)Where is the best area for living in kampala and how much (usd) can cost?
2) Is dangerous for a newborn baby? Is malaria a big issue for the baby? I dont want to give any pill to the baby!!
3) What about health assistance, are good clinics or hospitals in the city?
4)Will be easy to find a mate that can help in the "house tasks" to my wife? and help taking care of the baby? Will be safe?
5) As far as I read, there are several malls and restaurants in the city to expend tome with the family, is that true?
6) My wife does not speak english at all, will be easy to find a good place where she can study english? Also she might be interested in a photography course, will it be possible?
7) Which is the best internet provider?  What we read is that ornage is the fastest service, any tip? Thats important to keep comunication with family in colombia.
8) Is there any latin/spanish comunity in kampala??
9) Is easy to drive to kenya or tanzania?
10) Is kampala safe for expats?

thoose are our 10 questions...quite long I know, but any tip more than welcome and hope to meet some people there soon!!

Hello, Please see response below in CAPITAL.

Hello, we are a colombian family (wife and newborn baby) and I accept a job offer in Kampala, we are quite concern since we dont know much about the city!!  We have few questions, your feedback or any tip are more than welcome!!!

WELCOME TO UGANDA!!

1)Where is the best area for living in kampala and how much (usd) can cost? THE BEST AREAS ARE KOLOLO, NAKASERO, NAGURU AND BUGOLOBI. RENT IN THESE AREAS VARIES BETWEEN USD 1000 AND 3500 DEPENDING ON SIZE AND ROOMS.
2) Is dangerous for a newborn baby? Is malaria a big issue for the baby? I dont want to give any pill to the baby!! THERE SHOULD BE NO ISSUE AND I WOULD NOT WORRY ABOUT THIS. MALARIA MEDICATION IS STRONG AND NOT GOOD FOR NEW BORN BABY BUT AS LONG AS PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN E.G. BABY SLEEPS UNDER MOSQUITO NET, IT SHOULD BE FINE.
3) What about health assistance, are good clinics or hospitals in the city? THERE ARE GOOD CLINICS AND HOSPITALS, "THE SURGERY" ON ACACIA ROAD IS ONE, INTERNATIONAL HOSPITAL KAMPALA (IHK) IS ANOTHER, I PERSONALLY SEE A CUBAN DOCTOR WHO I CAN INTRODUCE YOU TO, HE HAS BEEN OUR FAMILY DOCTOR FOR YEARS AND WORKS FOR THE MILITARY/GOVERNMENT.
4)Will be easy to find a mate that can help in the "house tasks" to my wife? and help taking care of the baby? Will be safe? YES THIS SHOULD TYPICALLY BE SAFE ALTHOUGH ITS ALWAYS BETTER TO GET SOMEBODY ON RECOMMENDATION WHO CAN VOUCH FOR THEIR RELIABILITY.
5) As far as I read, there are several malls and restaurants in the city to expend tome with the family, is that true? THERE ARE SOME SHOPPING MALLS AND A GOOD NUMBER OF RESTAURANTS OF VARIOUS CUISINES.
6) My wife does not speak english at all, will be easy to find a good place where she can study english? Also she might be interested in a photography course, will it be possible? I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE AND THE MAKERERE INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGES DOES PROVIDE ENGLISH COURSES, AND I SAW MANY EXPATS THERE WHEN I WENT TO INQUIRE ABOUT SPANISH AND CHINESE LANGUAGE COURSES.
7) Which is the best internet provider?  What we read is that ornage is the fastest service, any tip? Thats important to keep comunication with family in colombia. CURRENTLY I AM USING MTN WHICH I BELIEVE IS THE FASTEST AND BEST. I GET ENOUGH SPEEDS TO COMMUNICATE WITH MY FRIENDS ABROAD AND FIND IT FASTER THAN ANY OTHERS I HAVE USED.
8) Is there any latin/spanish comunity in kampala?? THERE IS A SMALL LATIN COMMUNITY IN UGANDA.
9) Is easy to drive to kenya or tanzania? I HAVE NOT DRIVEN AS YET TO TANZANIA BUT HAVE MADE NUMEROUS DRIVES TO NAIROBI KENYA. IT TAKES ABOUT 11 HOURS AND IS 650 KM AWAY. THE ROADS ARE OK ALTHOUGH THERE ARE INEVITABLY SOME ROUGH PATCHES. BUSES ARE AVAILABLE BUT IF YOU WISH TO DRIVE I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU USE A 4X4 VEHICLE.
10) Is kampala safe for expats? YES, ABSOLUTELY.

KIND REGARDS AND WELCOME,
NAEEM
