Car has overstayed for a year now

alexaarichardson

Hi Everyone,

I have a 22 year old foreign plated car here in Morocco. I don't anticipate driving it back to my home country (UK), because it's old and I don't think I'll make it, plus I can't afford to do the travel and also I am not medically sound to travel all that way due to pregnancy. (I can manage a drive to Ceuta and back though if necessary).

I know that I am accumulating a fine and that I owe probably 10,000Dh now in fines by now. But, I've heard there is a cap/maximum fine of having the car here to 20,000Dh. I am just wondering if anyone has any actual fact if this is true or not?  Or am I just going to keep accumulating fines for as long as it stays here?

My custom date ended 29/06/2023. So any help or ideas of what I should do?

Any advice much appreciated.

Many Thanks,

A

Hello,

what did you end up doing? did you find any info? my husbands car has been in morocco over a year and its not worth taking it out and paying any fines  was wondering whether there was a way around it

@meriemzahi

no I didn't have any success in finding any info. But I think I will give it up to customs and it will be seized. The car is old and she's done me a great journey and time here, so I'm not too upset to let it go. I'm hoping then I won't pay any fines. Please let me know if you find any other information your end.

Hey! Any updates here from anyone?  I am in a similar situation, overstayed due to some medical issues and also extensive repairs to the car that were needed after engine overheat and even now I don't think it would make it back to north of Europe. Right now it has only been 1month of overstay and I am trying to decide what to do since my plan has always been to bring the car back home and then come back and stay in Morocco for a while, but with the current state of the car it is not possible. The car would still be good to use here for quite some time so I would happily keep it and give it up to customs at the end to be seized, but I guess I wouldn't be able to leave the country to visit home and come back if the car is still in the country right? Any info would be appreciated

Hi I overstay two weeks once and paid the fine and took the car out but never had Insurance because I never used the car. I have a question how are you getting around the Insurance aspect because on the ticket they give you at customs has a date of expiry where the car has to leave after that date how are you insuring the car. I want to keep My Car in the country for longer if I can next time.

Hi just a question I want to keep My Car in the country longer how are you getting around the Insurance so you can keep insured over the date that you should leave by

Hey, my insurance from Lithuania covers Morocco and is valid as long as my car as the LT technical inspection valid, so I don't use local insurance. It's all so confusing :D
