Requirements for foreigners to purchase...?

HalliHuberts

Hello everyone,
does anybody has an idea on what the requirements are to purchase land or property in Kenya?
Does the foreigner need to have Kenyan KRA Pin, residence etc.?

I am also curious if a foreigner can purchase vehicles and the adequate insurance without having KRA PIN?

Would be great to hear about such opportunities.

Hello,

You need a KRA PIN to purchase both properties and vehicles.

Property; you don't have to be resident, but foreigners cannot purchase land which has been classified as agricultural.  Only residential plots/properties can be purchased.  Foreigners cannot own freehold property, or residential plots, only leasehold.

If there is a case where a property is freehold upon purchase, the government will convert it to a 99 year lease.

Vehicles; you need a PIN for purchase and registration.  New vehicles are incredibly expensive, but there are lots of imports of vehicles from 5 - 8 years old, often from Japan.  If you want a diesel, look out for DPF's as these often bring problems, leading to costly repairs.  Ask whether duty has been paid (often quoted as CIF), as this can add 000's to the cost.  If you have a partner who is a returning resident, you can import 1 x vehicle duty free, provided it is right hand drive, under 8 years of age and has been owned for at least a year.
