Watch out for the heat
According to the latest report from the Mauritius Meteorological Services, this year's summer is expected to be hotter than usual. Expect days with temperatures two to three degrees Celsius above the long-term monthly average. Along the West Coast, for example, temperatures are likely to peak at 36 degrees Celsius. In Rodrigues, maximum temperatures could reach 33 degrees Celsius along the coast. This extended heat wave, accompanied by long periods of high humidity and light breezes, could make your nights a bit uncomfortable, especially between December 2023 and March 2024.
A delayed rainy season
If you've been expecting the usual summer rains to curb the current drought, you'll have to wait a little longer. The island isn't really going to experience heavy rainfall until the second half of December 2023. For Mauritius, cumulative summer rainfall should reach about 90% of normal or 1225 mm. For Rodrigues, rainfall is expected to be around 810 mm or 95% of normal.
Cyclones on the horizon
From January to March 2024, atmospheric conditions could be conducive to violent thunderstorms, torrential rains, etc. These intense but short-term phenomena could cause localized flooding.
The cyclone season will run from November 1, 2023, to May 15, 2024, with variable cyclone activity predicted. According to the report, between six and eight storms are expected in the southwest Indian Ocean, which could cause significant storm surges along the coast.
In short, the summer of 2023-2024 promises a varied weather cocktail. Stay alert, adapt to changing conditions, and make the most of this summer season, regardless of the weather. After all, these events will only spice up your summer adventure in Mauritius!
