2021 has not been an easy year for expats. While some managed to move abroad amid the pandemic, others simply enjoyed their time in their host country while others preferred to return home. We have selected for you 12 expats stories from the past 12 months.

Candice in Turkey

Originally from Ohio, Candice is an Afro-American expat mom and entrepreneur with an adventurous soul. She currently lives with her mum and daughter in Istanbul, where she had initially planned to spend a vacation before returning to Italy, her expat country. Stranded due to travel restrictions, she quickly fell in love with Turkey. Candice is also the author of several books focusing on the journeys of black women.

Pyotr in the United States

Pyotr has been an adventurer from a very young age. Thanks to his Russian father and his British mother, he has travelled to more than 80 countries. Today, he lives in the United States. Pyotr defines himself as an eco expat as he deeply values ecology and sustainability.

Marina in Guiana

For Marina, the start of the year 2021 was a real challenge. In January 2021, she moved to Guiana with her husband and their two children at the heart of the pandemic. Originally from Russia, Marina has got the chance to live in many countries thanks to her husband's career. She hopes to be able to stay in the country for a few more years so that her children can get the most of this experience.

Navine in Dubai

Navine is an Australian expat who currently lives in Dubai. Dynamic and rich with a career in many fields, Navine has the power of bringing people together. Recognizing the challenges that expat women typically face, she created a support group. This group brings together women of various origins living all over the world, allowing them to share their experiences, seek advice and have feedback.

Anja in Chile

Anja was born in Spain and has German origins as well, but she grew up in Chile. Having travelled with her family to Africa, especially Kenya, and then continued her studies in England, she settled down for a while before returning to Chile, a country that has always been dear to her. Today, Anja is an Expat Coach and helps expat women all over the world.

Laura in Australia

Laura is also a Spanish expat. After spending many years abroad, she finally moved to Australia. Why? Quite simply because she and her husband from New Zealand met in the United States, were seeking a better life on the other side of the world. Read Laura's story.

Marcie, back in the United States

For some expatriates, the year 2021 was marked by a return home. This was the case for Marcie, an American trailing spouse who has stayed in Paris, Seoul, Tokyo, and Shanghai. Both returned to Los Angeles this year due to the pandemic. Unfortunately, while her husband returned to Shanghai for at least a year and a half, Marcie was stranded in the US as she could not obtain a visa.

Andrea in the Netherlands

Andrea has been the talk of the town in the Netherlands lately, and that's something she can definitely take pride in. Originally from Ecuador, she lives in the Netherlands with her small family. Faced with the travel ban in the Netherlands for expats' family members, Andrea had not seen her mother for several months until recently. Her campaign, with the collaboration of other expatriates, has finally borne fruit. Find out more here.

Kim in El Salvador

For Kim, a British expat, love is the reason behind her move. She has lived in El Salvador for 11 years now with her partner, whom she met on the internet. Today, they are a happy little family enjoying life to the fullest, hoping to be able to travel again and let their children discover the world once the pandemic is over.

Sara in Mexico

Sara is an American expatriate from Philadelphia who currently lives in Mexico. She stands out from other expats thanks to her passion for helping others share their experiences. She is also an entrepreneur and author who has published several books in which women voice out their views. Besides her career and role as a mother, she also takes care of her husband, who has a post-polio disability. Sara devotes a lot of her time raising awareness to access for people with disabilities to public and tourist installations.

Elodie in Canada

Elodie is a young French expat who has lived in Canada for over 2 years. She initially moved to Montreal with a Working Holiday Visa. After that, she relocated to Vancouver. Elodie was captivated by the country's quality of life and the beautiful landscapes, so she decided to stay longer. She has even applied for permanent residence in Canada and is enjoying life to the fullest despite the pandemic.

Clémence and Fabien in Sri Lanka

Clémence is from Paris, and her husband, Fabien, is from Geneva. It's been almost three years since the couple moved to Sri Lanka, where they run a "guest house". Despite the pandemic, their passion for ecology encouraged them to set up a collective to promote “responsible travel” and “zero waste” in Sri Lanka.
