Hey people! Super grateful for this forum and hoping you guys could help me out. Im a Filipino but currently living in Canada. I am about to relocate to work in Germany via work permit. Now, I happened to fall in love with a Dutch! And were thinking if it is possible for us to settle down in the Netherlands but at the same time me working in Germany. It would be nice if that is possible. What do you guys think? Is this possible for me to live in the Netherlands and cross the border everyday to work in Germany?

PS: Right now the only option for us to see each other during this pandemic is through NL LDR visa. But were also thinking that applying for a permanent resident in the netherlands in the near future would be safer and secured than the short term visa.

You posted the same on the German forum (plus on the Canada one, curiously!). Those got removed, because multiple messages are not allowed. Thus I reply here, from a German perspective:
There are many people commuting over the border, living on one side and working on the other (if the two places are near the border). Most of them are EU citizens, who do not need any formalities to do so.
For you, however, things are different: You need a residence permit where you live and a work permit where you work. In Germany, at least, they are available only together - so you have to go through the same applications as someone living AND working here. In addition, you need a residence visa for the Netherlands (about which I know nothing) - hopefully another reader will answer that soon.

Do you have a Canadian passport by any chance?

I'm a Canadian citizen who has lived in Germany and is currently living in the Netherlands. As far as I know, since your visa was granted via sponsorship by a German employer, it allows you to live and work within the country that issued the visa which is Germany. You are allowed to visit other Schengen countries which includes the Netherlands.

Another option which you and your boyfriend could explore is the partner visa in the Netherlands. Your boyfriend could sponsor you if you are unmarried and have a long-term and exclusive relationship. To add to what Beppi was offered. Your current circumstances as you've described them permit you to live and work in Germany and as another has pointed out, you can use your German resident permit to travel to other Schengen member countries for up to 90 days in a 180 day period. So you couldn't "live" in the Netherlands.

You can't work in Germany on a Dutch work visa (in fact you won't get a Dutch visa of any kind to work in Germany). The EU in general does make provision for cross-border working, but they are for residents of member countries, you as a Philippine do not qualify (sorry). Further, I suspect your relationship does not yet have enough maturity to qualify for some kind of family visa for either Germany or the Netherlands.

The reality of the situation is that because of Schengen, with your Philippine passport and German resident permit, you can travel between Germany and the Netherlands as and when you wish (it's an open border, there are no controls unless you go and look for someone), so you can come and go as you please - I did it for 25 years. So my advice is to go with the flow, move to Germany, develop your relationship and see how it goes.
