I understand your wife is Vietnamese, she may be able to ask around to find someone who has "nấm kefir" (kefir culture). It's a very inexpensive item, most people would give it to you without hesitation.
The Kefir Group on FB is where people sell/buy/give/exchange kefir and kombucha culture. You may want to join it.
