Hi folks, will be a new resident of Colombo soon, and looking for a house to rent in Colombo with my girlfriend who is in sri lanka.
What i don't understand is, some people require 6 months key deposit ?
I find that outrageous. How does that make even sense ?
As i understand it, you pay 6 months deposit, but then you still pay your rent every month.
If ever there was a money grabbing scheme, then this is it.
Please explain to me why this is so, and how this works ? Maybe i got it wrong.

That's a pretty normal custom in SL as a deposit for any damages etc. you will get the deposit back if you leave the place in right condition, but you also can try to bargain down it to three months with help of this https://www.srilankalaw.lk/Volume-VII/rent-act.html. And make sure you have everything in writing! moreover three months is almost standard even in Europe. Have a nice stay in SL!
