Accommodation in Singapore: scams you should look out for

Hi,

Committing to renting or buying accommodation when you're new to or have not moved to Singapore just yet is always a stressful endeavour. Would you like to help us in putting together a handbook of what to look out for when house hunting in Singapore?

What are the most common scams in Singapore?

What are the red flags to look out for when scanning through adverts?

Is there a list of registered or accredited landlords or real estate agencies in Singapore?

What authorities should be sought should one come across an accommodation scam?

Please share your experience,

Bhavna

Singapore is so regulated it is difficult to scam anyone.

Plus there is the Council of Estate agents that looks into the activities of unscrupulous agents who or either barred or face criminal punishment.

We are so strict here, we dont even allow short term leases eg AB& B .

Providing basic furnishing but charging high rent is a scam!
So, when we want to rent, do check rents and its trend in the same HDB/Condo using propertyguru webpage, this will certainly help to negotiate costs.

Suggestions:
When renting out Condo, "Transparent wire mesh" this is for kids safety, usually many Condos don't have and we may need to go with additional one time investment... so for this, prior signing contact better to check with owner and Condo society, else it can be irritating.
