USA Taxreturn 2019 Dependents

Hello,
I was wondering if any of you have made the same experience. The new tax reform in the USA states, that you can only list children as dependents if they have a valid Social security number. Last year it was still sufficient to have an ITIN for the children.

This means having dependents does not result in a refund anymore.

Since I have an E2 Visa, I am not eligible to get a SSN for my children.

Does anyone have experience or an idea how this could be resolved, or are we, as resident aliens just victims of the new tax reform?

Any thoughts on this?

Greetings.

I think I would go see a tax expert.

Jim

It would be interesting to know how you are filing taxes for 2019.

E2 is not a Resident Alien.

I'm a bit confused by some of the statements here. An E2 visa is for investors.
With this visa they get residency in the States and can (and should) in fact apply for a SSN. Same goes for their kids. See the below link.

What is correct is that a SSN is needed to take child care tax credit or to claim them as a dependent.

E2 spouses can apply for EAD and SS thus are legally authorized to work in then US. Children cannot apply for EAD and are not eligible to work in the US based on parents E2.

One of the qualifying factors for child credit is SS valid for employment.

Some SS offices would issue SS for children locally on a one by one case back in the days but that has ceased with centralization.
