(a) Dual Sim/SD Card + (b) Google Fi

Greetings Expats,

My objective is to use one phone for a Vietnamese sim card and USA sim card while living in Vietnam without sacrificing my SD card:

(a) Is anyone successfully using dual sims + SD card in their phone (expert hack 11+ minute video - which appears to be in Vietnam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmJI3BQUHF4)? Or, is anyone using a nano sim extension cable (no SD card)?

(b) Has anyone had success with Google Fi in Vietnam? Vietnam is not (yet?) officially listed by Google Fi as one of 170+ countries participating in "Project Fi." Here's a recent article about Google Fi in Vietnam: https://www.halfhalftravel.com/blog/goo … ZupEvn-dA.

Next month I will test Google Fi service in Quy Nhon, and if no-go I will convert my number back to Google Voice. Google Fi's innovative network sharing/wifi solution seems to offer an attractive and disruptive service to USA customers traveling internationally at ($20 USD/month with no data).

I'm about to ditch my micro SD card and go dual sim.

I back everything to Google Drive already, and I pay the $1.99 a month for more GB than I'll ever use.

If I hadn't been afraid to let go of the SD card when I got here, I could already be set with dual sim.

Your own mileage may vary

Especially if you do banking on your smartphone, I would be careful with any hacks and manipulations on the smartphone.

In their terms and conditions, banks explicitly disclaim liability if the smartphone is rooted or otherwise tampered with.

I am someone who would never spend more than $250 on a smartphone.  So I have to be satisfied with 3GB / 32GB memory if I use both SIM cards (I can't do without that).

So far this has been good enough as I save photos on the computer and then delete them on the phone.  If you are a cloud user you can save all your photos in the cloud.

Facebook, Messenger and Zalo are big memory hogds.  I also delete the photos there from time to time.

There is also a maintenance tool on the Smarphones with which you can also free up memory.

On my wife's smartphone I installed an SD card, because she doesn't need 2 SIM cards.

But if you install a new SD card you have to change the data memory location of the memory-intensive apps like Facebook, Messenger and Zalo.  Otherwise, the internal memory will always be full and the phone will become sluggish.  Unfortunately, you can't change the data memory location for all apps.
