Hi. My name is Sally. My husband has been offered a job with his company in the Netherlands so we are currently in the position of deciding whether to make this move with our 3 children (age 5, 3 & 1). We have many questions and are unsure of where to find some of the answers so I'm really hoping that this forum will be able to provide some guidance and advice to help us firstly make the decision & then progress forward if we decide to move.
I am new to the forum and am yet to explore it so I look forward to finding out some more about your experiences & using them to help with our situation.

Hi everyone,

Myself and fiancee moved here to Netherlands 1 year ago, currently living in Geleen, we absolutely love it here, completely different from UK, our plan is to remain here for good.

We are in full time employment... but... with an UK employment agency, we both are planning to register with local municipality at the end of this month. we will be switching from UK agency to  dutch agency and still remain with the same employer.

Would definitely recommend the chance to move to Netherlands, lots of work here, better working conditions, clean country, only thing is.... watch out for cyclists :) there is a lot of cyclists... with there own cycle paths, which is good in a way, reduces the carbon footprint.

We are currently looking for ways to get a mortgage now, so even tho we have been here a year now, any help would be appreciated.

So best of luck to all you lovely people considering moving to Netherlands, from our experience we have no regrets what so ever.

Regards

Rob and Jo

Hi both and welcome to the Forum.

You may find yourself in a bit of bother; you should have registered with the local municipality within 5 days of arriving in Holland.  If you haven't done that, then I guess you haven't registered with the Dutch taxman, or health insurance either?  If you haven't, you may have a substantial bill waiting for you when you register.

Hi Cynic,

We are employed by an English agency, still paying taxes in UK, also a minimum amount of dutch tax, we have a sofi number, but as from 1st of April this year we will no longer work with our UK agency, but will sign over to a dutch employment agency, that's when we will start to pay proper amount of dutch tax.

Thanks for your feed back, all information is very helpful.

Kind Regards

Rob and Jo

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

At the top of the page is a link to our Discover section, if you mouse over that you'll get access to our Netherlands Guide; my first piece of advice is to read through that and follow the links it provides.it will help you with your journey.

To answer your specific question; there are really 2 different vias you could apply for.  The first is a joint work visa/permit where you enter the country based on your own skills; the second is a family visa where you enter the country based on the fact that you have a long and lasting relationship with your partner.  The Dutch Government department (IND) that deals with this has a website; this link will take you there; if you look for the highlighted words from above on the IND site, you'll get drop-down menus that will list all the visas available.

Once you've read our guide and the link I've provided, if you have any further specific questions, please come back to us.

Hope this helps.

Hi

another brit expat living in amsterdam centrum for a number of years..

Hello,
We exploring relocation and the Netherlands has come on our radar. We are from the US (KCMO) and we would appreciate any information other people from the US have relocated. At this point, we are interested in Maastricht.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

To be frank, the Netherlands doesn't offer retirement visas; if you are seriously considering the country as a potential place to retire, then unless you have some kind of family link to EU nationality, you almost certainly need to come here on some kind of work visa, which you then turn into a permanent residence after 5 years of working.

The Dutch government agency responsible for immigration is the IND, they have a website which has the details of all the potential work style visas; my advice is to check all those out and see what may help/suit you; this link will take you there.

Once you've had a look at those, if you have any further specific questions, please come back to us.

Hope this helps.

Hello, everyone! :)

My name is Kayla and I currently live in Oklahoma, USA. My whole life I have always loved to travel. One of my biggest dreams has always been to move and live in another country. I have a few friends from the Netherlands and hearing about their experiences living there urged me to want to know more! I am looking for help in regards to information about jobs in the Netherlands and a guide on moving. I am very excited that I can begin my own life and I want to make sure that I take the right steps and go in the right direction. This move would be a move I would make alone. Moving from the USA to the Netherlands is a very big step and any guidance would help!

Specific questions I do have: Is it easy getting a job in the Netherlands/Amsterdam area? What is the best way to find a job as an expat? What kind of visa would I need? How do I apply for a visa? Do I find a place to stay before getting a job? I have so much to ask, as I am very excited!

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

If you want to be self-employed, the best place to start is the Dutch Government website that deals with this; this link will take you there.  They can advise you on all the stuff you need to know about setting up your own business.

Hope this helps.

Hello, my name is Silviu. I am from Roumania, but I want to move to the Netherlands and find a good job there.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

As an EU citizen, you have the right to live and work anywhere in the EU; the issue you will face is learning Dutch well enough to gain employment there.  So, my advice is to read our Discover Netherlands guide (link top left of this page) and start learning Dutch.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much. I started the first lessons of Dutch. It's a hard tongue, at least for me, but I will try to teach it!

Hi All,
I'm in the Netherlands for some years now. I discoverd the website hypotheekberekenen.nl where you can calculate your mortgage for an expat mortgage calculator.
Really good to use it for if you want to live in the Netherlands and buy a house.
They bring you for free to an mortgage advisor! Really nice!
Good luck

Looks useful - thank you for the information.

Hello!!

My name is Dawn, and i from England. My husband currently works in the Netherlands, and we are considering  a move out there to join him. I have an 8 and 5 year old, so we need to make sure this decision is the right one. My main queries are things like schooling, safety, and general life in the Netherlands.

Would be nice to speak to people in similar situations, and get advice from those that have already made the move.

Thanks
Dawn.

Hi Dawn and welcome to the Forum.

Holland is a great country and when we moved there our kids were of a similar age to yours, albeit my wife is Dutch and we moved to her home town, so a bit like moving home really.  Our kids settled down really well at the Dutch state school and really thrived while we lived there.  We later moved back to the UK with my job but will be moving back ourselves in a few years.

You asked specifically about schooling; the Dutch system is totally different than the UK, the kids reach a significant milestone at age 12 where they are streamed into schools that will really direct the rest of there lives, so the sooner you move them and they learn to speak and write Dutch the better - it's a part of the assessment.  No state schools teach in English.

I don't know what you mean about safety; we never had any issues there.  Is there anything specific you want to know.

Life in Holland is good; they have a more family-based social life than the UK.  Bergen op Zoom is on the coast in the south-west of Holland; the only thing that stuck out for me is that it's flat (as is 99.9% of the country; I shan't spoil it and tell you where the hill is) and always seemed to be raining in comparison to where we lived on the opposite side of the country.

As it stands right now, you can just come and live in Holland and the only thing you and the kids need to do is register with the Gemeente when you get there (your husband will already have done this for himself, so he'll know how).  Post-Brexit, assuming your husband has gone through the process to remain there with the Dutch Government department dealing with it (the IND), it still shouldn't be a problem.

If you have any further questions, please come back to us.

Hope this helps.

Hi Hi Darlings!

So I'm Shay, and I'm looking to move to Amsterdam come July - It's for a variety of reasons; the major being I love the culture I experience when in Amsterdam and do not believe that we're born to live in one vicinity our entire lives!

I joined this forum to engage in learning exchange, pose questions I struggle to find answers to, and eventually be able to offer help once I'm in it all! My main queries will be around: etiquette and social norms, things to do outside of amsterdam, accomodation/renting, life admin/govt related stuff: Taxes, Health Care, insurance, personal services: network providers, banking, etc..

Pleasure to meet you all; If you see that we have something in common, Please don't refrain from connecting! Sometimes one-to-one chats work great for an ambivert like me!

Thanks and hope to chat with some of you soon! S.
