Language barriers in Oman

Hello,

Learning a new language is a part of the expat process. Let's find out how crucial it is to know the language in Oman.

What is the official language in Oman, and what are the other popular spoken languages?

Is it possible to live in Oman and get by without speaking the language?

How do you manage to communicate with the locals if you don't speak the native/official language fluently?

What are some popular and useful phrases that expats absolutely need to know?

Can you share some tips about how to survive in Oman on a daily basis without speaking the language?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

Hello,

Language is not at all a problem in Oman. Because people in Oman are more generous and friendly than any other countries people.
When I went to a hospital in muscat I saw a Omani guy talking to the nurse in Hindi. I've seen many Oman people speaking other languages it's a multi cultural national.
English is the best way to communicate in any country so you don't have to learn another language because of you travelling to Oman. Periodically with usual meeting with Omani people you will learn some useful things from them.
Once again am telling you it's a very friendly country and listen what they talking to you. Listening is more important than speaking.

hello Dear

Well Oman is very much mix culture society , official Language is Arabic, but English is widely using for pretty much everyday life and every where like restaurants , cafe shopping malls banks you just name it, on the other side , Arabic is not that hard to learn, if someone tale real interest can learn arabic in few months for intermediate level .
I hope this give you satisfactory answer , if you have any more topic to ask any thing, feel free to ask any time .
thanks & regards

Hello

There is no problem if you do not know the local language. Most of the locals including Taxi drivers use English and some are very good in it.

So you will not face any problem, but if you work with Local people you may learn the Arabic.

An interesting question although it is applicable anywhere on the globe.

There must be always a ( probation period) plus practice so that one grasps the needed repeatedly used vocabs . Thru practice with local services  taxis and others useful expressions will never abandon our memory.
I don't recommend learning or catching some expressions from pals or from books; Practice only makes perfect.

Hello Priscilla language barrier is not a problem in Oman because most of people are using English especially in public places like hotels , malls, supermarkets etc and for those who don't know how to speak English they understand what you saying if you go slow Oman is apeaceful country, they respect there cultural customs but to the foreigners is not a must to follow there cultural and customs it's up to you how you feel in the society
Arabic is there official language.
