Working in large cities

Working to survive in Brazil or owning your own business is always a hot topic.
There are always pitfalls and risk in any business enviornment anywhere.
There now exists a new opportunity for expats, however you need two important tools: a smart phone and a car. Work as much or as little as you want by hooking up with Uber. I drove for them in Monterey, Ca. and use them all the time in Salvador. The phone app. with gps tells you were to pick up and drop off. I think its a perfect fit for expats who have intermediate Portugues skills. Remember too, NO MONEY exchanges hands. It all debits from their account to yours, so that minimizes the crime factor...you simply drive all day, which gets boring too, but you meet lots of nice people!

We have a friend in Rio (Brazilian) who was doing that until he got carjacked. They put a gun to his head and told him they would kill him if he did not turn off the car and hand them the keys. They also took his wallet and cellphone. Rio has become a very dangerous place. So please be careful there.

..nice place to visit, would not want to live there. I value what's left of my life! Each city must be vetted before one pursues a life there as anywhere. There are towns in the US I would just not consider driving into, same in Brasil.

I agree 100%. When I first traveled there 16 years ago it wasn't that bad. Sure there were places to avoid, but now nowhere is safe. My mother in law still lives there and refuses to leave, even though she herself has been robbed at gun point on a bus.

Ok...firstly you need a decent car to do that.....our 1997 corsa doesn't qualify lol

Do you like Salvador? My wife's mother is from a small town in Bahia.
I have never been there but on my next visit I hope to.
