Buying a car in Cameroon

Hi,

To be able to move in Cameroon, a lot of expatriates think of buying a car, whether new or second-hand.

What are the formalities to buy a vehicle in Cameroon: car registration, insurance, etc.?

What are the relevant authorities or organizations to contact?

How long does it take and what are the associated costs?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Kenjee

Hi Kenjee
I will advise you buy while in Cameroon. You can always fine new or used in the economic capital
Douala. You may think of buying and clearing the car from the sea port but due to the fact that you are not familiar with the processes to clear a car , it may end up become too costly for you.
Any of the used or new car dealers can always assist to register the car on your name and insurance paid . Feel free to do further inquiry if need be.

There are plenty of used cars for sale in Cameroon. Registration is easy, dealers will help you. Even individual sellers will.
Corruption is always a problem to deal with. Just take it easy.
Bringing a car and clearing customs can be cumbersome and expensive, but it is doable. The customs fee is between 40 and 70% of the official value of the vehicle which is estimated by a contractor to the port authority called CIVIO. No appeal of their estimate to my knowledge has been successful.
