Hello all good people from CANADA! :)

Me and my girlfriend finally made a serious decision to permanently move and work in Canada.
What led us to that decision?

We are originally from Czech Republic, but from the age of 24 to 34 we lived in USA.
After 10 years we decided to move back to our "birth country" Czech Republic (the main reason was the family and also unfortunately we were not able to get legal status in USA).
After 6 years of living in Czech we are 100% sure that we should had never came back!! We are not able to live here and we only live from our memories from USA!

At this point we would appreciate very much some kind of help from people already living in Canada.

I'll try to describe our "not easy" situation in terms of obtaining the legal status in Canada :

I am at age of 40 and my girlfriend is 37. Together we have a great 2 daughters at age of 1 and 4,5 y.o
Neither of us have a college degree, but only high school so there is no chance to qualify through the Skilled Worker program?

My question is - Do I have a chance to apply as a "Self-Employed Persons Program" as that is exactly what I am doing right now over here?

1. I am professional photographer and videographer and my aim would be doing wedding videos in Vancouver. I have all professional equipment and skills to do the job the right way.

2. I am also very skilled carpenter. In USA I worked 9 years in a construction business. I specialised in concrete work, but I am able to do all kind of other carpentry work.

What my girlfriend can do?

She worked in USA in cleaning service and later established and operated a small cleaning service in Wisconsin-Madison. People loved her work and her personality very much and for some of them she was like a family member!

Before that she also took a care of a children in Switzerland and later in USA.

Her dream is to manage a small Creperie & Coffee House at some tourist destination in Canada. She has a great experience in this field from Switzerland ( Zermatt-Matterhorn). Off course that does not qualify her to apply for permanent resident status:) She also speaks French language very well.

We both have a great personality and believe in our dream to legally enter and work in Canada. Any help from you guys is very appreciated. I know it is not going to be easy, but maybe with some of the help from you we will be on the right track:):)

With all the best

Hello Roman,

Finding a job in Canada can be difficult for someone with a university degree and much harder still for someone without university. In the top three destinations preferred by newcomers (Toronto, Montreal , Vancouver) you're probably not going to stand a chance, for sure.

The Province of Alberta is presently the area of fastest economic growth in all of Canada and leads in job creation. There are from everything I've heard more jobs available than there are people to fill them and that this goes for jobs right across the full spectrum, not just professions that would require a university degree.

You'll probably stand a better chance of being accepted for a Canadian visa if you have some kind of job to go to. I'd suggest that you look around online for something in either Edmonton or Calgary, who knows you might get lucky. Try www.monster.ca for your job search.

Visit the Citizenship and Immigrations Canada website and complete the online forms to see if you qualify for a visa. You can do that now, but probably better to do so if you should find a job offer.

Good luck to the both of you.

We are originally from Czechoslovakia too (today Czech republic) and lived in Vancouver, but left the old country almost 30 years ago and the situation was different then. The "easiest" would be to have a job offer from a Canadian company, but that is a bit tricky because the company has to advertise a job position for a while to make sure that they cannot hire a Canadian for that. Other option would be to have somebody to sponsor your family. Usually the sponsors are relatives, but I've seen even friend's sponsorship.

I remember there was a Czech agency providing Babysitting services and bringing babysitters from Czech and Slovakia to Canada. Unfortunately I don't know the name. Try to look for it.

There is an online questionnaire, see what category you can fit in.

Hello William,
Thank you for detailed and valuable article from you:)

I looked at the Alberta Occupation program and it's very interesting. There is a good chance for me to get there as a Carpenter. Though it is not  an easy process to realise, at least it is a good feeling that something could be done! :)

My biggest challenge will be finding some employer who will be willing to hire me.

I will also continue searching for all other possible options for me and my family and we will see how it goes.

For now thank you very much for your time William and wish you all the best

Hi Denise :),
I am very glad to hear from you! Especially that you are from Czech:) You did the best thing to emigrate many years ago and now you have a great life in the Caribbean paradise:)

I don't know why, but I've always had a  luck for a great Czech people living abroad compared to Czech living in Czech Republic. The mood over here is very very "GREY" and I definitely don't want our kids to live over here!

I know it is going to be very hard to find Canadian employer willing to hire me:(
I don't think it is possible (at this time) to be sponsored from a friends ? If yes, would anyone suggest how to do that?

Babysitting is not the option for us either.

So we have a very difficult time in front of us to achieve our goal and thank you for your words to us!

Maybe if you still know some people in Vancouver who would like to help (not financially) a little to Czech fellows we would be very happy for any contact.

Have a great time where you are and we keep posting our steps leading to our dream:)
