I would be travelling to joburg soon with a view to hole up for at least a year. Would appreciate pointers on :
1) safe and cheap places for a single person to stay near Sandton. Possibility of a flat mate provided she is not a student.
2) good condition second hand cars or its rentals(diesel 1.6 turbo is my minimum choice)
3) good gyms nearby and their costs.
4) places to pick up cheap and fresh grocery and meats.
5) cool and safe places to hangout and socialise
It would indeed be most helpful if I could garner some insights through your help and feedback.

Worried about post sunset muggings and seeming restrictions in movement in joburg!

1) Check privateproperty.co.za you'll find loads of those.
2) Gumtree.co.za might be your choice, renting might be too much, and second hand cars you'll find in fair condition
3) Depends on the area you are going to be Virgin Active have branches all around.
4) Woolworths or the Fruit and Veggie Market on Rivonia for fresh organic fruits and veggies, Pick n Pay for most of the other stuff, Makro runs very good specials on meat, but a butchery is my best option, check Sloane Meat Market
5) Almost everywhere in Sandton
