There are many Indians in Johannesburg. There is no reason to worry.
I would imagine it is impossible to live accident free, burglar free, theft free, but crime rates have dropped since the World Cup and some areas have a strong police presence and CCTV surveillance.
The biggest tip for safety in Johannesburg is as it is anywhere else. Remain aware of your surroundings and you will be less of a target for criminals.
