Digital Nomad Greece Income Tax Question

Hi all,

I have just been granted a Greece Digital Nomad visa. I am from the United Kingdom, although have not lived there for the last 10 years (working from both America and Dubai).

It states that as long as I am working for less than 183 days in Greece I do not pay Greece income tax (as do not become a tax resident).

  1. Do I pay tax to the UK and claim it back at the end of the tax year (due to not being classed a tax resident due to not being in the country more than 183 days)
  2. Or Do I not pay tax to any country and not a tax resident in either UK or Greece?

Just unsure what to instruct my employers.

Does anyone have experience with this situation?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Congratulations!  As you well know, the DNV, not to mention freelancing for some, brings with it layers of questions and complexities.  Your question is impossible to answer as it is currently asked.  ie:- what is your citizenship status in the UK? Were you a permanent resident while working most recently in the US? And the list of questions goes on.... However, I can offer a few things-- 1) there is a digital nomad big event coming up in Athens in a week or two if you are here, and there are experts and workshops I am told on topics like this (look on the "My Expat Journey Website for the announcement).  2) "British in Greece" is a very informative and well moderated FB page, and their archives are quite useful info. and 3) I am not remotely a tax expert or even that knowledgable, but I do know that, of the countries you've mentioned, only the US has a citizenship based taxation regime-- most countries do not tax you if you are not living in the country, but the US does if you are a citizen or a permanent resident of the US- regardless of where you live.   This is not the forum for this question.  You should go straight to a really good international tax guy like Michael Mertz, since you move around.  FB and forums are full of hopelessly wrong and confusing information about taxes and digital nomads....  not what you wanted, but I hope it was helpful.  If you leave Greece before 183 days, you have to move around as to not be a tax resident somewhere else-- perhaps you'd enjoy following the "Nomad Capitalist."
