Education in Cape Town

Hi everyone,

I'm a 19 year old polytechnic student from Singapore, and I wish to continue my education at Stellenbosch University.

I was just wondering if anyone could let me know more about the education system and the language policies in Cape Town?

I am interested in a Law degree, and I have sourced direct contacts from the school. However I do wish to find out more about the culture, the people and the overall social environment of the country and if possible the University.

Thank you very much for your time and advise! I really appreciate the help :)

Hi Levina!

Welcome to Expat.com ;)

Armand

My brother-in-law studies at Stellenbosch and loves it. I don't know if it applies to all courses but for his course (Theology) the classes are in English but they can write their essays in English or Afrikaans.

General language requirements - Stellenbosch is very Afrikaans but because of all the tourists and students I would say English is well used and you would have no problems getting around just speaking English for general living purposes. Although you may want to learn a thing or two in Afrikaans out of politeness and ease of understanding others around you.

It is a beautiful town and quite student and tourist focused. If you like the outdoors, you will love living there. It is also in the wine region and there are beautiful wine/brandy estates, fruit farms, mountains and you are not too far from the coast but you would need to drive.

The university also publish their own 'living in stellenbpsch guide': 0.sun.ac.za/international/repository/living.pdf

I hope that is helpful.

Hey pikkewyntjie,

Thank you very much for your reply! It was insightful and helpful to me :)

Would you know, by any chance, the education system in SA?

I already have my GCE O Level examination cert. and I'm currently taking a Diploma (Polytechnic) in Mass Communication. I have heard that the Cambridge O Level exam is recognized by Stellenbosch, however I'm not so sure if I can say the same about my diploma.

Just for a little extra info, in the Polytechnic, we follow the GPA (Grade Point Average) System.

And I would also like to ask if you might know the admission criteria? Because I've checked out the website (thank you for the link :)) However, I can't seem to find that info anywhere.

Once again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
