People generally tend to associate Dubai with skyscrapers and highways - which is true. However, the city also provides a lot of sports and outdoor activities for nature lovers.

Outdoor activities

Hatta is a favourite spot for Dubai residents. It is the town located in the foothills of the Hajar Mountains, and the route takes 1hr 30 mins (130km). Hatta is famous for its various water activities like standup paddle and kayaking. You can also rent water bikes or yellow boats to enjoy the natural turquoise pools. The best time to visit Hatta is between October and May.

Kite Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Dubai and is a perfect choice to relax and enjoy beautiful views of Burj Al Arab. You can also try watersports or simply fly a kite. The beach is usually full on weekends.

Have you ever heard about sandboarding? It is one of the desert-based activities in Dubai and is similar to snowboarding. It is safe and easy compared to other desert activities.

If you don't like sandboarding, you should try quad biking. Quad biking is a four-wheeled biking experience in the desert at high speed.

For those who prefer cycling, the best thing to do is fat biking. You can buy your own fat bike or rent one to start exploring the area with friends. Some of the safaris offer all those activities together with camel riding and BBQ dinner.

Sports events

There are many events happening every weekend in Dubai, and these can help you expand your social circle. You can find the information on social networks like Facebook. Follow the expat groups in Dubai. Many residents do their morning run or yoga at the beach. What could be better to start the day? It is also an excellent way to meet new people and make new friends when you are new to a country or a city.

If you are not an early bird, you can still rent a bike in the evening to roam around the city. There are individual cycling tracks in Dubai. You can also find bike rental shops all over the city.

Dubai Fitness Challenge

In 2017, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, issued a challenge to all residents and visitors, government organisations and schools across Dubai to join Dubai Fitness Challenge.

The Dubai Fitness Challenge continued in 2018. Five different fitness villages were created across the city with a lot of various sports events every day and these attracted many residents. Something similar is in the pipeline, so just follow the Dubai news updates.


Arabian Ranches is one of the districts in Dubai with lots of green spaces and expensive real estate properties. It has its own golf course, which fits any professional or amateur. The Club also boasts of a Gold Academy and a special Junior Golf Development Programme.

Horse racing

Horse racing events and riding lessons take place at the Meydan Racecourse which has the capacity of accommodating 60,000 spectators and hosting popular sporting events like the Dubai World Club.
