Finding accommodation in Örebro is going to be relatively easier than in other Swedish cities. A magnet for expats because of its university, but still not too big or well-known to face housing shortage issues, Örebro is a very picturesque place to live. Located in the heart of a triangle between Stockholm, Gothenburg and Oslo, Örebro has a booming labour market and a population of 150,000, whove come from 165 different countries.

The housing market in örebro

Örebro is basically built around its medieval castle which, remains until today the heart of the city and an impressive tourist attraction. The area surrounding it is the Old Town, which is very picturesque but quite difficult to find housing in. Because of its growing university, there are also numerous options for student housing in örebro.

Finding first-hand rental in örebro will take some time, as there is a housing queue you will need to register and a point system. Once you register, you collect 1 point automatically every day: you can apply for apartments right away, but if another person has applied for the same apartment and they have collected more points than you, you will not be considered. This practically means that the longer you wait, the better your chances to find an apartment. As a result of that, people in örebro rent second-hand, i.e. renting the accommodation from the current tenant, with the owner's consent. Since even renting second-hand will take some time, good alternatives in the meantime include renting short-term, flat-sharing or co-living.

Good to know: If you are in a hurry to find an apartment, you can register for a short-term apartment through örebro's housing queue. This will allow you to keep collecting your points so that eventually you can qualify for long-term housing.

Rent prices in örebro are considerably lower than in Stockholm or even in Uppsala. For instance, you will need an average of 3,400 SEK (340 euros) for a one-bedroom apartment and from 6,300-10,600 SEK (630-1,060 euros) for a three-bedroom apartment. These prices usually include hot water and electricity.

How to find accommodation in örebro

If you are planning to settle in örebro you will have to be patient and plan your move well in advance. Word of mouth is no doubt a useful tool when it comes to housing search, so feel free to ask your friends and contacts on the spot regarding any vacant housing units.
