Texan moving south

Texan2Chile

Howdy, Hola, Oi,

I’m new here and looking for some real-world perspective.

I’m 67 and only partially retired right now. My plan is to retire fully in about two years (maybe sooner) and relocate to Viña del Mar.

A little background so you know where I’m coming from: I was born in Texas, but my family moved to Brazil when I was 3, and I lived there until I was 18. I went to the Escola Americana from kindergarten through 12th grade and graduated in 1976. My mother is Chilean—she moved to the U.S. after WWII for college, where she met my dad—so I guess you could say I’m a full-fledged “mutt” in the best sense.

I came back to the U.S. for college in New Orleans and eventually settled in Houston. Now I’m feeling the pull to head back down south.

What I’m especially curious about is the social side: what’s it like making new Chilean friends as a newcomer (gay and at my age)? My impression is that Chileans can be a bit more reserved than Brazilians, and I’ll admit I’m a Carioca de coração—so I’m used to a more spontaneous, open social style.

Any experiences, advice, or “what I wish I knew before moving” thoughts—especially about meeting people and building friendships in/around Viña—would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance—gracias, obrigado.

Patrick
