What are the implications of my CRNM after the divorce?

I hold a passport from an Asian country and got married to my wife one year ago. Three months ago, I returned to work in Africa, and now she wants to divorce me. My CRNM, which I obtained through marriage and is valid until 2033, will it be canceled? Do I need to return to Brazil within two years? Will the Federal Police investigate my marital status? Will the Federal Police question me about this on my next visit to Brazil? Could this affect my ability to buy property or do business in Brazil? I lived in Brazil for only three months, and our marriage is about to complete one year, but I didn’t expect the perspective on marriage in Brazil to be so different. I am surprised by how easily people divorce here. My CRNM is governed by the LEGAL BASIS: ART. 37, LAW 13.445/2017.

I’m sorry to hear your marriage didn’t last very long. You certainly have a great number of good questions which I am sure you will find answers here on the forum. The only question I feel qualified to answer is the one about your time outside Brazil. As a permanent resident you must not be outside Brazil any longer than two years before touching Brazilian soil. If you stay outside Brazil over two years you most likely will lose your residency.

It is not difficult for me to return to Brazil, it’s just a matter of airfare, but I wonder if my CRNM will be automatically lost after the divorce and if it will still work when I enter Brazil? Do I need to buy a house in Brazil?

Good evening. Your CRNM will not be automatically lost as a direct result of your divorce. The Federal Police are not informed of divorces by the cartórios, and will not investigate them spontaneously. I hope that you and your ex-wife parted on friendly terms: if not, she could conceivably try to make trouble for you with the Federal Police and spark an inquiry that could put your current status in jeopardy. If that doesn't happen, though, and if, as @bepmoht states, you're not out of Brazil for more than two continuous years without returning at least temporarily, you should be ok until the expiration date of your CRNM.

Chances are that it will be difficult for you to renew your CRNM when it is approaching its expiration date however, if the marriage on which it is based has ended and if you no longer live in Brazil.
