Buying a caravan from Brazil for export can I claim the tax value

crocket56

Hi.

I am looking at buying a new caravan from the manufacturer in Brazil.

The caravan will be exported to New Zealand.

From what I believe products for export are tax exempt.

The local listed price is 119000 reals, if  was to buy it at the same price is there a percentage of this figure that is tax that I can claim back?.

Or do prices on new vehicles etc not have the tax included?

07/02/23 Welcome, crocket56.  I'm afraid that I can't be much help to you; all of my export/import work in Brazil has been on the import side.  If Brazil has a VAT Drawback program like European countries have had for generations, I'm not aware if it.  It would surprise me:  Brazil really, really dislikes refunding taxes.

Whatever programs exist, the people who should know about them and should be breaking their picks to work them for you are the manufacture's reps.  Think about the program that Mercedes used to have -- and maybe still does -- for Americans who went to Europe to pick up their cars.  If when you bring up tax refunds with them and all you get in return is the Mechanic's Shrug, that's a big, flashing red light.

I hope that you have the incoming duty issues worked out already at the New Zealand end.  It would be a shame to solve the Brazilian maze, only to be confronted with an unpleasant surprise  when you get your purchase home.  Best of luck.

@abthree Thank you for that.

From what I have read all items for export are tax  exempt.

The company I am dealing with say the price will be the same as a local would pay, they have not exported them before so I was hoping they might be wrong.

I have been told that in the states the tax is paid after purchasing a vehicle to the government so maybe their pricing does not include tax.

I have done this before with English caravans so know what taxes are applied at this end.

I don't think it is viable to import these if it is the full price so I might have to leave it.

I have emailed many accountants in Brazil about this but haven't had one reply so thought I would give this forum a try.
