Quality of customer service in the United Arab Emirates

Hello everyone,

Customer service can say a lot about everyday life in the United Arab Emirates, and for many expats, it’s something that could take time to get used to. In order to help expats and soon-to-be expats to adjust to local expectations, we invite you to share your insights.

How would you describe customer service in the United Arab Emirates?

Are staff generally friendly and helpful, or more formal and direct?

How do businesses handle complaints or requests for refunds?

Do expats get treated differently than locals?

Any tips on how to get the best service in the United Arab Emirates?

Share your experiences and stories, whether positive, challenging or funny!

Thank you for your contribution.

Hello Cheryl,

Thank you for opening this discussion. As an expat living in the UAE, I’ve had a mix of positive and challenging experiences with customer service, but overall I would describe it as professional, fast, and generally respectful.

In most places such as malls, banks, and government service centers, staff are polite and helpful, though sometimes they can come across as a bit formal or direct rather than overly friendly. This is especially true in busy environments where efficiency is prioritized. However, in hospitality sectors like restaurants, hotels, and delivery services, the service is often very friendly and welcoming.

When it comes to complaints or refunds, policies are usually strict and clearly defined. Many businesses follow their rules closely, so it can take time and persistence to resolve issues. That said, if you stay calm, explain your situation clearly, and follow the official process, most companies eventually try to find a solution.

From my experience, expats are generally treated equally, especially in international or customer-facing businesses. The UAE is a very diverse country, and staff are used to dealing with people from different nationalities. However, knowing your rights as a consumer and communicating confidently can make a big difference in how smoothly things go.

One tip for getting the best service here is to always remain polite and patient, even if the situation is frustrating. Clear communication, keeping receipts, and following up through official channels like customer support or social media can also help speed up resolutions.

Overall, customer service in the UAE is quite structured and efficient. Once you understand how systems and policies work, it becomes much easier to navigate daily interactions.

Thank you again for giving expats the opportunity to share their experiences.
