The story of my life, my experiences.India to Bahrain

Vishnu Nair

Hello All,
I have been thinking to write about me and my experience for quite a long time. But out of laziness and given priority for sleeping over everything else and yeah of course due to busy work schedules, I couldn't get time. Now its time to write. Let me introduce myself. I'm from Kerala( Gods own country), India. A finance professional. My career was doing good at India, then I decided to try some GCC country. I will never say it was only for better career opportunities, being frank like most of people the eyes were on tax free salary that's being offered in GCC and moreover it was destiny. Right after giving exams for Chartered Accountancy, I started my job hunt on sites like bayt, naukrigulf, but unfortunately nothing showed up. I came to know from few friends working in Dubai that most of jobs works on a recommendation basis, also the vacancies are filled internally by employee references. I was having hope and didn't stop applying. Weeks and months passed and finally I decided to talk to my cousin brother who's working in Bahrain under a well known star hotel. He agreed to check if there's some vacancy and I waited with hopes. After two days he sent email saying one post is open and I can apply for that. I was happy that at last something showed up. The process was simple, just register your details with company site and then later it will guide you to filling up little bit details. Finally when you are done with it, you must attend an online interview where there will be a set of questions which you should answer logically with in stipulated time. Questions were not that tough, so it went fine and I submitted the answers. Finally a message came that the hiring department will contact shortly if selected. It was days of waiting and I keep on checking with my brother. After  to days I got a call from Bahrain, it was just an inquiry call asking whether I applied for job and updating few other details. Later I got a call from HR department asking suitable time for a telephonic interview. It was a Thursday and I fixed time on Sunday evening around  7 pm. Tension was there a bit like every candidate. Moreover I never had experience in hospitality industry. But I decided to face it well. Then finally the awaited Sunday came and I got call. The interview was pure scenario based and was exactly opposite of my expectations. I had interview experience with few companies in India asking every single and small details or checking the knowledge of core finance and accounts like some examination in school. But this was different and new experience to me. The interview went well and I answered all the questions with my level best. Again I was asked to wait for confirmation email. Few days went just like that and finally one evening I got a whatsapp message from my brother to check my email. I was busy doing nothing and checked email immediately. SURPRISE....it was my letter of appointment. The full contract meant to be signed and sent back. It was moments of happiness and surprise, over and above that the insecurity of becoming an expat and sadness of loosing my comfort zone, my family, my room, my friends and list goes on. I informed my family and few friends regarding this and took a print out of contract to checking all details. Next day itself I signed the same and emailed them back. I never knew much about migrating from India to GCC as there was not much people to guide me. My brother gave instructions regarding the steps. First one was obtaining a police clearance certificate as per the terms of company, just to prove that I'm not WANTED( Of course I'm not, not even a petty case on my name  :D ). The second one was obtaining a medical clearance from GAMCA which is very important. Lastly making a purchase list which will make my life little bit easy as an expat.

The police clearance was received very fast( hope you know how to make it fast :D ). The next day I decided to go near by GAMCA center which was 60 kms away. I called the office one day before and they asked me to come for getting appointment at 9am. So I started early from home. As instructed by them the test would take only 30-45 minutes and results will be out by same day evening, I decided to make some purchases( clothes of course). As it was a  star hotel they ave a dress code and I was advised to purchase suite for daily wear. I reached around 8.45 am at GAMCA office, the process was easy. All they will do is take your passport and give appointment to accredited health clinics among the list. They will ask you to stand in front of a webcam to include a picture on appointment letter( Of course you look like some refugee in that pic). Later they will give instructions about location of test center. I reached the test center with in half hour and was asked to wait. After 10 minutes I was asked to go inside for check ups. First it was a blood test and the later urine. After that they checked my eye. The final and important one was chest X ray. From my true experience the people working at center are not all professional and very rude. They behave very strange and you must have patience level infinite. The way they give instructions and talks will make you grind your own teeth and increase your blood pressure. I waited patiently and finished with chest x ray. I was asked to come later at 4pm evening, So I decided to go for my purchases. I went to famous shop and bought two suite and other stuff. had lunch and waited for their call

Tragic incidents happens in most unexpected way for all of us in life. Once I reached the medical center I was waiting at counter for results, then one lady give me a small bit of paper in which it was written X ray and I was asked to go X ray room again. The X ray was taken again and after that I met one guy( definitely not doctor). He was just a lab technician. He first asked whether I had any serious diseases before. I was shocked and tensed. I said no, as I had no previous records of major diseases. The guy said on my left lung there's a small opacity which could be some disease or traces of previous diseases . I felt like my head is twisting, but I was confused inside my mind because I never had such a medical history. I believed I was healthy enough. I told him I just had a viral fever two weeks before and then that guy( idiot of course) told me may be the opacity was due to viral fever. I was asked to come for checkup again after one week. I left with such a bad mood and started my journey back to home. I didn't sleep that night and firmly decided to consult the best pulmonologist available next day itself so that I can assure I don't have any serious issues. Next day morning I went hospital to see the best doctor in my place. Waited at hospital for few hours to get my chance as too much patients were waiting for him. Once I entered his room, I found that the doctor was my super senior during high school. He welcomed me and asked about my issues, I explained everything in 5 minutes. He was silent for sometime and then started talking. It was all about the unethical practices of people working inside GAMCA for obtaining bribe. Since he was pulmonologist, he said every month he will deal with couple of similar cases. Before even suggesting anything he said 99 percent he was sure that I don't have any major issues but just to confirm its better to take an X ray. Again another X ray and I was waiting outside doctors room. I could hear my own heart beat. After sometime I was called inside and the doctor made a detailed investigation on my X ray. After 5 minutes he said he cannot find any kind of opacity of any part of my lungs. At that point of time he was having many years of practice as doctor and gained was specialist in pulmonology with international degrees. He was 100 percent sure that I dont have any issues and nothing was visible on X ray. I asked him to give a medical certificate but he said instead of arguing with them try to negotiate, that would be better. Because the GCC countries will accept only reports from gamca and not from any other doctor whether government or private. He advised me to offer something to that lab technician so that he will give pass certificate as I don't want to loose the job offer which was pretty good. So i decided to go for retest after one week. Every day was full of tension and I was sleepless.

So finally after one week, I went again for retest. This time they took only chest X ray which was matter of 5 minutes but again asked me to wait till evening which I never understood. As X ray results can be analyzed with in a short time. The same old lab technician was there looking at me(giving hint for something), as I was tensed my brain didn't recognize it there. I was made to wait till 4 pm evening for results. I spent time at my friends place waiting for good news. Finally it was 4 and I reached the medical center again. They only got bad news for me. He said I'm medically unfit and I cannot travel to Bahrain. He said they will post it on LMRA site and I will get a temporary ban of 6 months. They made fun by telling me that If I get a NOC from Bahrain government then there is no need for such medical test. I was shocked and silent. Didn't reply anything and left the place immediately
