A Schengen Visa is an authorization issued by one of the Member-States for the purpose of airport transit, transit or an intended short stay in a territory of one or more Member-States, allowing its holder to present him/herself at the external frontier, but does not automatically guarantee his/her respective entrance, which will be decided by the border authorities upon arrival.

The Schengen visa is a short-stay visa for a maximum period of ninety (90) days during any hundred and eighty (180) days period and can be granted for tourism, family visit, business, seasonal work, transit, among others.

A short-stay visa does not necessarily grant the holder the right to enter the Schengen area. At the border (or any control point) the visa holder may have to display the visa or provide additional documentation, including proofing financial means for the duration of the stay and for the return trip.

Seasonal work visa:
Seasonal work visas are issued to allow anyone wishing to engage in subordinate seasonal work, for a period equal to or less than 90 days, in previously approved fields of work.
This type of visa cannot be granted by Portugal by virtue of representation of another Member State, and vice-versa. Seasonal work visas should be applied for at the consular post of the country where the applicant wishes to engage in seasonal work.

Airport transit visa:
Airport Transit Visas are granted to allow a person to transit within the international area of an airport, from one flight to another, without entering the Schengen area.

The applicant shall appear in person at the consular post of the applicant´s area of residency.

The visa request instruction should provide justification regarding the objective and conditions of stay. If necessary, the consular post may schedule an interview, in person, with the applicant, to be held within two weeks of the date of application. All documents are to be produced in their original form, including copies.

Necessary documents being considered admissible as well as the payment of the visa fee for the administrative processing of the visa application does not entail a visa being granted, nor does it entail a refund in case of refusal.

Long-stay visas, in compliance with existing domestic law, can be either temporary or for residency authorization purposes, depending on the duration of the stay and granting the visa holder an authorization to stay in the country according to different purposes: study, internship, work, medical treatment, among others.

Temporary stay visas allow entry and stay in Portugal for less than a year. Temporary stay visas are valid during the entire stay and allow for multiple entries.

Residency visas allow two entries and is valid for a period of 4 months. During that time, the holder of a residency visa is required to request a residency permit with the Immigration and Border Services (SEF).

Family Reunification Visa = Reagrupamento familiar (D6 visa)

Step 1: Application for Family Reunification by the Resident in Portugal (with AIMA)

Who applies: The foreign citizen who is legally residing in Portugal (the "main applicant" or "resident") initiates this first step.

Where to apply: The resident applies at an AIMA service point (Loja AIMA) in their area of residence in Portugal.

Purpose: The resident requests AIMA to recognize the right to family reunification for their family member(s) abroad.

AIMA's Decision: AIMA will analyze the application and typically issue a decision within 3 months. If the case is complex, it might be extended for another 3 months. You will receive a notification from AIMA granting family reunification. This notification is crucial for the next step.

Step 2: Visa Application by the Family Member Abroad (at Portuguese Consulate/Embassy)

Who applies: The family member(s) who wish to join the resident in Portugal.

Where to apply: At the Portuguese Consulate or Embassy in their country of habitual residence. In some countries, visa applications are handled by external service providers like VFS Global.

Timeline: Crucially, the visa application must be submitted within 90 days of receiving the family reunification authorization from AIMA. Failure to do so can result in the forfeiture of the decision.

Visa Type: This is usually a Residence Visa for Family Reunification (D6 Visa).

Step 3: Entry into Portugal and Residence Permit Application (with AIMA)

Entry: Once the D6 visa is granted, the family member can enter Portugal.

Residence Permit: After entering Portugal, the family member must schedule an appointment with AIMA to apply for their residence permit. The D6 visa usually allows for a certain period (e.g., 120 days) to enter Portugal and complete this step. The residence permit issued will generally have the same validity as the resident's permit.

"Cartão de residência para familiar de cidadão UE que não tenha nacionalidade europeia"

Os familiares de cidadãos da UE que não tenham nacionalidade europeia devem pedir o cartão de residência para poder residir em Portugal por mais de três meses. O cartão de residência deve ser pedido no prazo de trinta dias após os três meses de entrada em território nacional, nos balcões de atendimento do Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF), fazendo o agendamento prévio. Tem um custo de 15€ ou 7,5€ para menores de 6 anos.

O cartão de residência é válido por 5 anos desde a data da emissão, ou até à data prevista da estada da/o cidadã/o em Portugal, caso for inferior a 5 anos.

Saiba quais as condições e que documentos deve apresentar ao pedir o cartão de residência, no site do Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF).

Caso permaneça em Portugal por mais de três meses sem pedir o cartão de residência, pode ser multado entre 400 a 1.500€.
