unfurnished apartments

kliebetanz

Dear Community,

We (EU-citizen and spouse is US) are considering moving to Malta in 2017 and are trying to gather as much info as we can about life in Malta ahead of time.
Looking at apartments to rent we noticed that the vast majority of apartments seem to be furnished. As we would like to use our own furniture which we would move from the US to Malta we are wondering if there is any way that one might be able to negotiate with a potential landlord to rent the apartment in question unfurnished (for many years)?
We would be very grateful for your input.
Greetings from Seatte

Most are furnished as you have found... some landlords will have storage to store the unwanted furniture etc but most dont and will expect you to keep it somewhere and some without a reduction in rent....

Dont expect to get the right property. first time  = most dont and move..... very few have been lucky enough to manage to get ti right first time.....many people move a few times as things change, services change, neighbours change and so on so be  prepared to do so, am not saying you wont do so just be prepared for it if the circumstances call for it ...... it took us a year and two properties (in Bugibba for 6mths and Santa Maria for 6mths) to realise where we really wanted to be and what we really wanted from the experience in Malta, and then spent 5 years in Mellieha itself in two lovely properties with fab landlords.....  I guess we were very lucky to have good landlords each time and we moved for personal reasons on the realisation of what we really wanted  not because of dodgy landlord practices.

good luck
