Residency question- EU citizen

Hello,
I am a bit confused and I have some questions about the residency requirements for EU citizens and I need some help.
First, as an EU citizen I know that I have the right to stay in Malta for 90 days and I need to apply for residency to stay longer.
Could you please tell me when do I have to apply for residency (as a worker/self-employed person) in order to be able to stay in Malta for more than 3 months.
I read that the application process and the processing of applications takes months, and what makes me confused is how can I respect the 3 months period and get the residency on time if the process takes so long?
When do I have to apply for residency in such case- right after my arrival or?

Application is time prescribed, within 90 days. Once you have applied you have done what you should do. How long they then take to send you your card is down to them. You may well receive a temporary card (paper) with your number on it before you receive the plastic card. If it helps, read this:

PS, you're not applying for residency (as you have the right to reside) you are stating your intention to reside.
A minor point of definition.

it is sufficient to apply - dont worry about how long it takes to get the permit.. you are EU and as such you have the right to stay as long as you want whether you have the permit or not... the permit is an administrative requirement and nothing more

When you first arrive and want some services, you may be asked for a deposit until you get the card, Melita TV/internet most probably will. Other wise passport should be enough.

Just one last question that I don't quite understand- in case I stay longer than 3 months what is the right order to do things: can I start searching for jobs before applying for residency?Or is the residency a prerequisite to apply for jobs?

You can search/apply for jobs before applying for residency.

Basically, you can do anything you like

It really is not that big a deal as an EU citizen.
There may be some advantages in having your e-residence but as Malta drags itself into line with EU legislation, the number of those advantages, small as they are, are diminishing.
So, if you are minded to come, don't worry. Get here, have a look around and enjoy!

its not a problem here if you are EU as Red has said come here have a look around get the feel of the place enjoy what you can and if you dont like it or what you see you make the decision thats right for you - good luck
