Tax Exemption on my car

Reggie2

Hello all.

Moving to Swieqi next week.
Rented a place for six months from a friend of ours who has several properties in Malta.

All done on a casual basis then Jan we intend to move to somewhere more rural.

I have owned my car 7 years so therefore exempt from import tax.

Do I need a 12 month contract(proof of transfer of the property)for the apartment to comply with the registration/tax exemption on the vehicle?

can I apply for the registration/tax exsemption before ID arrives?

Is it 20 or 30 days from arrival.

Confused...

Cheers

Hi Reggie

''Do I need a 12 month contract(proof of transfer of the property)for the apartment to comply with the registration/tax exemption on the vehicle?''

You don't have to have it , but it would make things a lot easier - we do not have it and are hoping that other docs will be sufficient (still awaiting the verdict).

''can I apply for the registration/tax exsemption before ID arrives?''

Yes.

And it's within 30 days from the car's arrival to Malta.

Good luck

Yes you do need the rental contract or proof of property ownership and have to show it at the registration offices as well when you get the number plates eventually. We didn't take it with us and were sent home to fetch it before they would proceed!

Reggie2

OK Cheers for that

Reggie2

Sorry forgot to ask,you only had to produce it when you eventually got the number plates not on the initial application?
I can get one just concerned I wont have it within the 30 day application period.

Can anyone tell me :
I have been'Told' that to comply with car importation tax relief that the 2 year period of ownership must be at the same address??
Not read or heard of that before.....
Anyone any experience in that department?
Thanks

Hi Reggie2

Other docs they usually refer to 'anything else at all that might prove' whatever it is referring to. E.G. the email I got after submitting the documents stated 3 things to be proven - 1. residency outside Malta for the last 2 years (payslip / bank statments & etc. for the full 2 previuos years), 2.ownership of the vehicle for the last 2 years (vehicle reg cert, proof of insurance for last 2 years, proof of purchase if you have it & etc.) & 3. proof of taking up residency in Malta (we provided our 6 month contract as this is all we had and I queried if anything else would be acceptable instead, specifically our residency appointment confirmation email & was told to submit it &  will be considered (could not get the acutally temp residency cert as I wasn't working back then to go for the app personally) I also wrote a letter outlining documents I included & explaining some of them & added few extra bits showing that we definetely moved here - hoping for the best now.

In relation to 30 days, you need to submit your request within this time frame. They send you an e-mail following with the letter if any other docs are oustanding and give you another 30 days from the date on the letter to submit them.

Hope this helps a bit

Never heard of it. How would they even tell? I moved within 2 years and the log-book shows only my last address & still the original registration date in my name.

Reggie2

Many thanks Tinna.
Much appreciated

yes Tinna very true.
You hear so many conflicting comments and experiences you don't quite know which ones are genuine???
Where do you guys live?
Thanks again
Reggie

Toon

cant say ive heard of it either - but being able to catagorically prove your ownership is a must

Reggie2

Thanks on that Toon.

Toon

sometimes that can mean producing the bill of sale and the servicing receipts etc etc etc

Hi Reggie

We're in St. Paul's Bay for the next 5 months. May be moving closer to Sliema/Gzira/Msida/Floriana towards the end of the year due to the jobs location. Although we really like it here :/

& Toon is right - the more documents you can provide , the better :D
