microchipping and ID tagging of dogs

georgeingozo

The microchipping law for dogs is now being enforced (*). Owners face a fine of up to € 300 if their dog isn't chipped, and ID tagged when in public. This is for all dogs 4 months old or over.

* an owner was fined € 300 a few days ago

[edit: - ID tagging is required at any age]

Is their a good reason for this law to be enforced, or is it just another way for the government to generate revenue?

georgeingozo

1. chipping fee replaces the annual dog licence
2. means lost dogs can be returned to owners quicker
3. means people who dump dogs can be prosecuted easier
4. work of animal sanctuaries reduced

all the above requires enforcement of the law

georgeingozo

There are about 75,000-100,000 dogs in Gozo and Malta. About 50,000 have been chipped so far and maybe 25,000 wear an ID tag.

Sounds like a great reason George.

It will hopefully reduce the number of Dogs just walking around the streets and will again make people more responsible for their own animals.

Sorry but i am not familiar, with the term work of animal sanctuaries reduced.

georgeingozo

" work of animal sanctuaries reduced." - big part of sanctuaries work is reuniting lost animals with their owners

falcon5

Well over here if an animal is not reunited with its owner within 7 days it is put up for sale, and if not sold within 7 days its put to rest. As for dumping of animals, we hand them in to animal shelters. So this new law still seams to me as a way for the government to generate revenue

georgeingozo

chipping and tagging makes reuniting a dog with its owner normally a simple procedure - just a matter of a phone call or two

georgeingozo

chipping and ID tagging your dog is common sense - unfortunately most people don't have common sense

falcon5

Oh come on mate now youre getting personal

georgeingozo

BTW, chipping of dogs is also compulsory where you live

scubaboy

Falcon dont think that he personally meant that you have no common sense... I think it was just a generalisation here
