Opening a bank account in Malta

Julien

Hi all,

is it difficult for expats to open a bank account in Malta ?

Which documents are required to open a bank account in Malta ?

How long does it take to open it ?

Is there any restriction for expats regarding the services (loans for instance)  ?

Which bank would you recommend ?

Thanks in advance for your participation,

Julien

Did you ever get any info on this? Seems strange that there are no responses! It will probably differ for non EU citizens but as an EU citizen HSBC, BOV and APS will ask for;

1. Passport or ID card
2. Reference letter from your last bank
3. Opening amount of 20 euros

If you are with HSBC in another country I believe they can assist with the opening process if you move to HSBC here.

BOV seems the most used and best of the bunch, as long as you're able to get a reference I would recommend them.

Banif do not ask for such reference but I would 100% NOT recommend them as I've had nothing but problems since day one. Plus their opening amount is 150euros.

their service is slow, their internet banking site is unavailable most days (when I reported this I was told that it's because they are a better bank than everyone else....) and they have lost my wages for over a week, they often remove/add money to my account incorrectly and payments in/out can take weeks.

I think the reason why there was not much response is that there have been many previous posts on opening a bank account.

When I opened my bank account with HSBC I did not need a reference letter from my German bank once I had my Maltese ID card.

HSBC wanted my German bank director to contact them about a recommendation but my German bank director (Commerzbank) did not agree to giving my bank account details to someone at HSBC Malta ( HSBC where? Is that a real bank? -)).

That might be because Germany is very particular about passing out personal information or maybe they just didn't want to loose me as a customer- who knows.

Cheers
