Cost of living in Malta in 2026

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Every year, we invite you to share your experiences with the cost of living in Malta, especially in the region or city you live in. Your insights will greatly help members planning their move to Malta or already living there.

Here are some points to guide you; the idea is to provide average prices for each category:

What is the cost of renting or buying an apartment or house in Malta?

What are the typical fares for public transportation such as buses, subways, trains, trams, or taxis?

Could you share the average monthly cost of your grocery shopping?

How much does health insurance cost? What is the price of a medical consultation in Malta?

What are the tuition fees for children?

What are the average monthly costs for utilities, such as electricity, gas, water, internet, and phone plans?

How much do you spend monthly on leisure activities?

If there are other expenses you find relevant, please feel free to share them!

Thank you for your contribution.

Te rental cost: I used to pay Euro 300/month, I moved in in 2019. My landlady, who lives on top of me needs some help as she is disabled. I do her shopping, I drive her whenever she needs to go to appointments by dokters, clinics and/or hospital, banks. I take care of the garden and clean the outdoor space and do some general maintenance. And I cook for her on a daily basis. Since 2021 she does not accept any rent. so I live rent free in a nice apartment in exchange of some care. The commercial rent value is estimated at Euro 900/month.

Transport cost: I use free of charge the car of my landlady. Sometimes I use the bus without cost as I am a pensioner having a Maltese pension (I live here 40 years) so consequently free transport on buses and ferry to/from Malta.

Average cost of monthly groceries: I estimate the average cost of groceries at Euro 400,- per month.

Health care: is free (N.I.) as this is part of my Maltese pension.

Utilities: Are provided free of charge by my landlady.

Leisure activities: Mostly dinners with friends, which I estimate at Euro 400/month.

Travel: 4 times a year a long weekend to my home country (The Netherlands) which cost me average Euro 1200,- per trip.
