Answer is "No" EU means open borders.

I would like to move some furniture and other household items from France to Malta.
Can anyone advise if there are any customs formalities/paperwork required for this? - @Pandorak

To import household goods to Malta, you must own them for at least six months and live abroad for 18 months if you are a returning citizen, or have a work/temporary residence permit if you are a foreign national...

I realise there's no VAT or Import taxes, but can one simply load up a truck/container and ship one's worldly possessions to/from any EU member state?

I moved all my stuff from the UK (when it was in the EU) all they way to Austria in a Luton van, it had beds, cloths, settees, TV, table, chairs etc... Didn't have any paperwork to do, custom declaration forms.

Now its different, even receiving packages from the UK can be pain in the butt. I tell my family not to bother, just wire me money for  Christmas and our Birthdays.

Last week my sister came over and was able to bring presents in the hand luggage and not do anything. Its so confusing.
