Managing mailboxes or PO boxes in Italy

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Something as simple as receiving mail can become a whole new experience when you settle in Italy as an expat. Mailing management can indeed be different from what you are used to. In order to help other expats and soon-to-be expats, we invite you to share your insights.

How do you receive mail in Italy? Do you have a traditional mailbox, a PO Box, or another system?

How was it to set it up and what are the formalities?

Is the postal service reliable and secure?

How do you handle missed deliveries or forwarding your mail?

Do you have any tips you would like to share to newcomers and fellow expats?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

@Cheryl this was definitely a challenge for us.  Different areas in Italy handle addresses differently but the address has to be properly registered to make it easy to find for deliveries.  We ended up paying for our map to be delivered to a mailboxes etc an it worked great for us.  The only thing to keep in mind is their working hours - (most business close from 12p or 1p to around 5p each day.). Even if you can get packages delivered to your house, most drivers won’t leave them so if you’re not home - you don’t get the delivery.
