Driving -Insurance

Hi!

I live in England only about 6 months a year. How can I get affordable car insurance? Everywhere we’ve tried has been exorbitant.

Thanks!

A simple answer to that is just to shop around. Car insurance in the UK is very expensive, especially if you are new to the country. Maybe have it in your husband's name and have you as a named driver?

We have shopped around. No luck, and yes it’s in my husbands name. Thx anyway.

Have you tried asking your US insurer?  The difficulty you are facing is that the European Insurance market is not geared up for temporary residence (some suppliers require residency as a minimum), then things like no-claims bonus are geared around the previous 12 months insurance activity, so you will likely never qualify; all these things reduce the marketplace which as you are finding out, can only have one effect - put the prices up and cost you a small fortune.

One other solution which will also be expensive is to hire a car when you actually need one.

I hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your help.

The prices will be quite high in the UK due to a range of reasons such as car theft, bad drivers crashing and uninsured drivers.
