Kids on the autism spectrum

Julio Manu

Hi friends,

We are planning to move to Bulgaria (Plovdiv) next year with our 11-year-old child who is on the autism spectrum. We would love to hear from other parents who have been in a similar situation.

We're not asking about subsidies or financial support, we’re more interested in:

Schools and education

Social attitudes toward autistic children

Places to go or inclusive activities, etc.

Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello Julio Manu,

I have moved your thread to the Plovdiv forum where you are more likely to collect the information you need.

All the best,

Cheryl

If you’re moving to Plovdiv, the biggest thing is choosing the right neighbourhood first. Some schools are a lot more open to neurodivergent kids than others. The language barrier is real in the beginning, but teachers who’ve had autistic students before usually adapt much faster than you expect. You’ll find the social attitude mixed… older people can be a bit stiff, but parents with kids under 15 tend to be pretty understanding. The city has decent parks, sensory-friendly hours at a few malls, and a couple of weekend groups for kids who aren’t into loud environments. If you want something structured you can actually follow along with before you move, Autism 360 helped us make a game plan at home so the transition wasn’t chaotic.
