Living without residency

Is it really necessary to pursue residency? We are considering a move to Nicaragua. I will work remotely for a US company, and my husband is a stay at home dad. We have three children. My income will cover the rentier requirements, but my husband is not yet eligible for social security. Can we just go to Costa Rica every 3 months? Has anyone done this long term?

The majority of expats here do not have residency though it will probably be more necessary in the future. You can go to CR or another country every 90 days (180 with an extension).

Amy and I have residency and are considering becoming even citizens now. With residency you can have a vehicle (without it you can purchase a vehicle but you cannot register it). Residency avoids the need to leave the country, own a firearm, have a phone plan, carry your passport and a few other things. You can start a company and buy property without residency.

So there are advantages but most expats do not have residency. In fact, I believe there are only 1200 expat residents in the country.

You can renew your visa in-country after 90 days and only go to Costa Rica every six months. You will pay for the Visa. From what friends tell me it cost about C$ 1700 to renew in Nicaragua. Every six months you need to leave the country for 72 hours.
There are many advantages to having residency and if you qualify and are going to live here it would be worth the time effort and money to obtain it.
